Wednesday, May 30, 1000.
The Senate voted Monday to
remove the Port Iloyal naval station
to Charleston. The vote
was 35 to 11.
The sight witnessed Monday
was one that will not again ho
seen in this section of the country
in the lifetime ot those now
living or of their children.
A meeting of the census enumerators
for this county was held
at. the courthouse Saturday after
noon tc discuss the rules sent out
by the government for their guidance
in taking the census which
work they will begin next Fri
day.
The Eclipse and the Winthrop
Girls.
The predicted eclipse of ihe sun,
unlike the nrnilic.tnr] Klinwor r*l
shooting stars that were to be seen
some months ago, appeared Mon
day morning on schedule lime and
was the observed of all observers.
From the time of the first con
tact till the period of totality was
an hour and about thirteen min
utes. The sight just before and
during the period of totality was
superbly grand. Three stars or
planets were observed by some,
one (the planet Mercury) near
the sun, another lower down in
the east, and the other in the
southern heavens. We saw only
Mercury, which the astronomers
tell us is one of the planets ol
which the earth is another. They
tell us it is smaller than our
planet and only about 35,000,000
miles from the sun. while the
earth is about 91,000,000 miles
away from that luminary.
The eclipse over, all interest
centered on the arrival of the
Winthrop college girls and its
president and faculty who had
passed down on a special train
early that morning to view the
eclipse at the most favorable point
on the line (near Elgin). Accordingly
people and vehicles
began to gather at the depot to
see them arrive and to convey
them to the beautiful grove of
the graded school building. The
five wagons had been coupled
out and provided with improvised
seats covered with white cloth
from the Lancaster cotton mills
These wagons bore the feminine
freight to the grove amid the
cheers and the.jolly huzzas of the
public and the girls themselves.
At the grove ice cold lemonade
was provided for all and each girl
was given a neat little bouquet of
flowers, lied with the colors of
the ?:oiiecu There our readv ?nrt
popular Mayor, Mr. Waddy C.
Thomson, delivered an appropriate
and unique address of wel
come, which was responded to by
Mr. I). R Johnson, president of
Winthrop college.
We regret our inability to furnish
our readers with President
Johnson's address of response.
The following is the. address of
Mayor Thomson :
Mr President) Faculty and
Young Ladies of Winthrop.
Representing the town of
Lancaster as its executive offif
cer uml thereby the servant of;
its citizens, I take pleasure in
behalf of the town in extending
to you this morning a hearty
welcome to our community.
We feel honored in your stopping
in our midst on your way
home. We have made no elaborate
preparation or program
for the occasion, feeling sure
that you would not expect it
and that you would reailily appreciate
that your short stay
with us would not permit it,
however willing we might be to
make the occasion one to be remembered
by you. Young ladies,
as a community, we are
proud of the Institution that is
today training you for the walks
and responsibilities of life; it
is as much ours as it is of any
community in the state, and we
commend the wise action of
I i - _ ; ? ?
your mum nisi ration in providing
the opportunity of observing
to an advantage the sublime
spectacle afforded you this
morning, and we sincerely trust
that, as you have felt awed and
impressed with the iinmutibility
of God's laws governing the
universe, as witnessed this
morning, and have realized the
utter helplessness and inability
of man to prevent or stay them,
that you have also been impressed
with the knowledge of
man in providing you with a
schedule of this wonderful event
as reliable as that of the train
that carried you to your point
of observation, and that it has
illustrated to you the possible
attainment of man by training,
study and observation, and that
it may lead you, each one, to a
just appreciation of your valuable
opportunities.
It is our desire and wish that
you shall feel at home with us
during your stay in our community,
and I assure you that
all of our homes are open to
you, that you will find the
door of every house in Lancaster
unlocked to you, and it
fives lii(( nloasnre in nlivnincr
into your cure and keeping tlio
I key of the entire town, with
your colors attached as a seal
of your authority and ownership.
Feeling that we are indebted
to the eclipse for the pleasure
of this visit, we have made thai
key that we tender you as a
souvenir of the occasion, large
enough to "Eclipse" any that
you are accustomed to use. We
ask you to accept, regarding it
as symbolical of the truth, that
"to him that hath the key,
there is no mystery."
Young ladies and students,
you have our best wishes for the
highest possible attainments,
and we trust that when you
leave your alma mater to enter
life's walks and assume their
responsibilities that your pathway
shall be brightened not
only by tbe orb of day, but that
you will invite into it the rich,
warm beams of the Son of
Righteousness and have tliein
i mi? *-i 11 iif^ in your ni'iins, inaij
you may, like the moon when 1
in its ususl orbi . r lect them
unto others, nnd that you may
never, never, by any :.ct of your
own, create or p r 1 any ol>stiele
to 001110 bet we v. ou nnd
Ilis divine inlluenc .
Trusting that your stay with
us may be pleasant, and wishing
you a safe, return to your
college, I now take pleasure in
turning you over to the care of
your Lancaster friends.
When the locomotive whistle
signaled the near approach of
their departure from our midst
all here were genuinely sorrv that
our fair guests could not remain
longer.
