STATE CONVENTION.

boon couveutiou was held toda^.
Every one who is in State or
national politics, who has been
in it and wants to get back, and
those who waut to get a taste of
politics now or in the future,
were here. It was a regular low
feast in politics. Conservatives,
straightouts, reformers. TilJmau
ites and all were in attendance
and voted for each other and pat
ed each other on the back.
The convention did nothing
remarkable. It endorsed Bryan
and instructed its delegalion to
vote for him.
The convention was called to
order by President Wiley Jones.
In escorting up Temporary President
Breazeale be made a hit
by appointing on the committee
all of the pronounced gubernatorial
candidates.
Mr. Breazeale was then intro.
duced and he thanked the convention
for the honor. He ex
plained why the convention had
assembled. Since the last convention
in this State new issues and
problems had arisen and many
events had transpired in the po
litical world. At most throughout
the world there had been uprising
of the people in behalf of
liberty. The United States had
played no unimportant part.
Ouba had been freed from Spain's
yoke and had a republican form
of government for the people, of
the people and by the people.
W. D. Evans nominated T. O.
Hamer, clerk of the house, for
temporary secretary and he was
unanimously elected.
Mr. Stansell was nominated for
sergeant-at arms and was unani
mously elected.
On motion of Mr. Prince the
chairman of each delegation was
asked to hand in the revised Hots
of delegates.
J. W. Dunn was made assistant
secretary.

and he was elected by acclamation.
There were three or four
"Noes" in the voting preliminery
to this result.
A committee consisting of
Messrs. McDow and Bellinger
was appointed to escort Mr. Stevenson
to the chair. Mr. Steven
f-on on taking the chair thanked
the convention for the honor,
doubly an honor coming from
such a grand old State as South
Carolina. The convention was
meeting on the transition from
one centuiy to another, to elect
delegates to name a standard
bearer to usher in the new century,
a leader standing in the
shoes of Thomas Jefferson. He
looked back and referred to South
Carolina's great growth in taxable
property, in cotton manufac
turing, gecoud now to Massachusetts,
and in tobacco growing. We
now have a united front and have
rolled back the dark cloud of
Negro domination. Railroads are
being built here faster than in
any other State. It is a peenom
enal record for a decade.
The convention appointed committees
of one from each county
on platform and reaolutionp with
Senator Tillman as chairman, and
constitution and bylaws with
Mr. DeBruhl as chairman.
A large number of resolutions
were presented, Col. Hoyt's re
quiring the pledge to support the
national nominees and a vigor
oub platform from the same
pource being among them.
The election of the four delegates
at large was then entered
upon and quickly disposed of.

Senator Henderson named Gov.
McTweeney.
Gov. Sheppard, "in behalf of
the tidgefield delegation/' named
Senator B. R.Tillman.
Nominations were closed and
the four nominees were elected.
Mr. Cosgrove, of Charleston,
t> ing the first to second the nomination.
The delegates from each congressional
district are to meet at
7 :30 to seleet the district delegations.
The committee on platform
and resolutions met this afternoon
and elected B. R. Tillman
'hairman and August Kohn secretary.
The committee reported favorably
on resolution instructing the
delegation to vote for Bryan and
avored the unit rule on platform
and president.
Col. Hoyfc's platform was agreed
to. It denounced the financial
policy of the trusts and called
upon the State and national gov
ernment to pass such stringent
laws as will curtail their op?ra
tionR in the future. His resolu
tions also denounced the imperalistic
policy of the present government
as contrary to the spirit
of our institutions. He also in
eluded a resolution that the pre
?ent war in the Philippines is unjust,
and that these people should
he given free government under
a United States protectorate, if
necessary. The resolutions also
denounced the Porto Rican policy
by of the republican party, endorsed
W. J. Bryan as a candinate
for president and expressed
sympathy for the Boers.
The committee was somewhat
divided about expressing svmpathy
with the Boers, but Tillman
urged the adoption of this section,
which was done.
The platform is being drawn
by the sub committee; it will be
on lines already indicated,, op
posing imperialism, Tne policy
towards Porto Rico, Cuba and the
Philippines.
Mr. WelleR, of Edgefield, intro
duced a resolution against the
dispensary and in advocating a
local option scheme. This was
unfavorably reported as not hav-1
ine anything to do with the con- j
vention.
