Washington, May 10.?The
monthly crop report of the agricultural
department is as follows
:
Returns to the statistician of
the department of agriculture
made up to May 1 show the
area under winter wheat in cultivation
on that date to have
been about 25,585,000 acres, or
3 563 000 oi* 11 S pci* cent inau
than the area estigated to have

ofrany especial significance.
The work done in the country
at large is estimated at 08.4 per
cent, of the total contemplated,
the proportion usually done by
May 1 being about 75 per cent
of the whole. In South' Carolina,
Alabama, Mississippi and
Texas the work is later than any
year for which records are available.
In consequence of the almost
if not entirely unprecedented
backwardness of the season, the
statistician is unable to make
the' usual preliminary estimate
of the new acreage of cotton.

A CARD.
Mr. ) .r As I have yielded
to J .ishes of my friends.
. and ie a candidate for
I Sheriff, I would respectfully ask
you to do mo the kindness to
publish this communication in
the columns of your valuable
paper; for the reason that it
will be impossible for me to
make a house to house canvass
during the campaign. It is
known to the people of Lancaster
that I have served my county
as sheriff for a number of
years, and my State as U.S.
Marshal for one term. It now
remains with my fellow citizens
t.o say whether or not I have
been true and faithful in the
discharge of my official duties
in the past. Should they conclude
that I have been, and
choose to favor me with an election
to the office of sheriff again,
I promise with the help of a
kind Providence to render as
faithful service in the future as
I endeavored to perform when I
was their servant in the past;
and shall always be guided by
that golden rule: "Do unto
others as I would wish them to
do unto me." Sopie would
feiltti oersuade mv friends to
try a ?/
believe that I committed an
offense by resigning the sheriff's
office and accepting the U. S.
Marshal's office, which was procured
for me by strong friends
in this county and State?after
persistent persuasion to allow
my name to be used for said
office. In this matter I did only
what my friends urged me to do ;
and I am confident that no one
can say truthfully that T have
ever, in any instance, been disloyal
to those who have so kindly
given me their confidence
and support. If any one has
suffered any detriment whatever
by the course of my friends, in
promoting me to the office of U.
S. Marshall, I have never yet
heard of it.
While I have been highly
honored by my good friends of
this county and State, for which
I shall ever feel very grateful, I
am nevertheless a poor man today.
Nor am I at all ashamed
of my poverty : for it is no disgrace
to be poor if honest, any
more than it is to be rich, if
riches be honestly obtained. If
I 1,0.1 KOO., O -
i ikvu uci:ii (i vvivuiuua nielli, HJS
some would like to hrvvo my
friends believe, I would have
been independent to-day, so far i
as tbis world's goods are concerned
; and the very fact that I
am still a poor man refutes
the insinuations of those who
malign inc.
All of these matters, however,
I shall leave to the good
people of Lancaster county to
determine; and let them say '
whether or not I have ever
turned a deaf ear to cries for '
help, or have ever been blind to
the needs of poor struggling i
humanity, when it was in my 1
power to relieve want or suffering.
The question of selecting a
I sheriff for the next four years is ,
before the voters ; and with con|
fidenee in their judgment I shall
await their decision at the pri-l
I mary, as to who shall serve them,
and pledge myself to abide by
the result of their ballot.
Very respectfully,
J. P. Hunter.

Eruptions of Vesuvius.
Naples, May 0.?The activity
of Vesuvius is becoming more
formidable and the observatory
officials announce that theseis
inic instruments are extremely
agitated. A thick column of
smoke is rising from the crater
and the earth shocks are vio|
lent.
Tho cable car service up Mt.
Vesuvius has been suspended in
consequence of the eruption.
Four Englishmen attempted to
ascend the mountain on foot,
and,eluding the vigilance of the
carbineers, who form a cordon
at a height beyond which tho
ascent is considered unsafe,
they approached the summit.
Suddenly the volcano belched
forth a stream of lava and large
stones, which descended upon
the foolhardy tourists, who were
rescued in a terribly bruised
and battered condition and removed
to the hospital.
