Quay lost hisjsoat in the United States senate by a majority of one vote only. If the weather is favorable the bulk of the cotton crop will be planted by next Saturday night. The farmer has done little or no plowing since Wednesday of last week, but if the weather is favorable he will lose no time next week. Wheat and oats promise to be unusually fine this year. Reports from all sections of the county indicate this. J . W. Napier, of Georgia, was convicted in Bennettsville last week under the law forbidding tho business of acting as immigrant agents in this State without a license, and was fined ^ $500.00. "V. . The Meeting to be Held in Columbia 31 ay 23. The following call for a conference, or convention, has been issued by a committee of the prohit.i uutH of the Stale: A State prohibition conference ill be held iu the city of (Jolum bia, S. (J*, on Wednesday,23d day of May, 1900, for the purpose of considering the propriety of sug getting candidates for governor and lieutenant governor to rep resent the psohibitionistsof South Carolina in the Democratic pri mar\, and also aunouce tiie principles and purposes oi the pioliibitionists in seeking to obtain control through the Democratic organization of the executive and legislative departments of the State government, for the enactment and enforcement of raeasures which are in best accord with the highest interests of the people, and which will take the State out of the liquor business. For thp purpose of obtaining u full and free expression of the prohibitionists in regard to these matters, a call is hereby issued for them to assemble in their re sportive counties at the court house on Saturday, 12th day ot May, 1800, to elect three respre sentatives, with alternatives, ?c attend the State conference on the 23d of May, with or without instructions and to choose a conn ty chairman for the ensuing cam paign. There is very little doubt bat that the liquor question with the dispensary will be the chief ?>tate issue. It will be the old light of 18U8 over again with this difference(unless 1 have been mistaken in the impressions that have been made upon me in visiting the different sections ot the tSiate) 1'he lines will lie closely drawn and the candidates wiii have to tane their cnoice between the home and the dispensary. This is ttie tight and the in terests of the two are as differ* ent as the day is different to the night. The Christian home is the home and stay of tho State; it is hallowed hy every sacred tie and is the brightest and happiest spot on earth The dispensary la the greatest enemy of the home, the m isi dangerous place in every : * a ? * unminiihiiy, ami i? woriung tlail> and hourly to r>b th?? homo of ail of itH, attraction*. It snatches from its influence the most promising of its houh and t>iken to h drunkard's home (homo in name only) the fairest >?nd loveliest ol its daughter*, and this, f >o, vutli 'he authority and *andi:i of the State, heeauHH ilie politician s who now control the democratic parry says it nniHt goon. Where do you stand in 1900, for prohibition or for dispensary '* Are yon a del', n der of the home or are you its enemy? 1 believe you will have the manhood to shake oil the shackles of the dispensary run: and the whiskey trust and rtand up for the good naino rf your home and State. The candidate is to he p ied who is a member of the church and pretends to claim that to* be lieves ''the dispensaiv law ihe best solution of the whi*fey question" because be thinks he can secure office through the dts pensary mac line, thus selling himself, his home, and playing the hypocrite in order to do it. 'I he prohibitiontsts may or may not have candidates far all the offices to be voted for, but, if the Christian men and women will do their duty from this dav fur ward, we will win a great victory this year. Draw the lines closely and let every candidate under* atand that tie must take one aide or the other, anil that no prohibition candidate will vote for a man who take? the aide of the dinpen nary. A.
