Cotton and corn that were
planted before the rains began
last week are up nicely.
Matt S. Quay lost hisjsoat in
the United States senate by a
majority of one vote only.
If the weather is favorable
the bulk of the cotton crop will
be planted by next Saturday
night.
The farmer has done little or
no plowing since Wednesday of
last week, but if the weather is
favorable he will lose no time
next week.
Wheat and oats promise to be
unusually fine this year. Reports
from all sections of the county
indicate this.

CALL A CONFERENCE.
The Meeting to be Held in Columbia

The following call for a conference,
or convention, has been
issued by a committee of the prohit.i
uutH of the Stale:
A State prohibition conference
ill be held iu the city of (Jolum
bia, S. (J*, on Wednesday,23d day
of May, 1900, for the purpose of
considering the propriety of sug
getting candidates for governor
and lieutenant governor to rep
resent the psohibitionistsof South
Carolina in the Democratic pri
mar\, and also aunouce tiie principles
and purposes oi the pioliibitionists
in seeking to obtain
control through the Democratic
organization of the executive and
legislative departments of the
State government, for the enactment
and enforcement of raeasures
which are in best accord
with the highest interests of the
people, and which will take the
State out of the liquor business.
For thp purpose of obtaining u
full and free expression of the
prohibitionists in regard to these
matters, a call is hereby issued
for them to assemble in their re
sportive counties at the court
house on Saturday, 12th day ot
May, 1800, to elect three respre
sentatives, with alternatives, ?c
attend the State conference on
the 23d of May, with or without
instructions and to choose a conn

with the dispensary will be
the chief ?>tate issue. It will be
the old light of 18U8 over again
with this difference(unless 1 have
been mistaken in the impressions
that have been made upon me in
visiting the different sections ot
the tSiate) 1'he lines will lie
closely drawn and the candidates
wiii have to tane their cnoice between
the home and the dispensary.
This is ttie tight and the in
terests of the two are as differ*

night. The Christian home is the

'I he prohibitiontsts may or may
not have candidates far all the
offices to be voted for, but, if the
Christian men and women will
do their duty from this dav fur
ward, we will win a great victory
this year. Draw the lines closely
