p!e o! this neighborhood have
been pushing things to the front
in the way of farming until the
recent rains, which began to fall
last Wednesday 18th about 10
o'clock, and has been raining
almost without ceasing ever since
until tonight. Saturday 21st, uini
hence farming is at. a stand still
just now. Although some of the
farmers around Magill are through
planting their cotton crop, viz:
Messrs. Roby and Geo Bell have
been through planting for some
time and George says he is feeling
so dreadful lonesome with nothing
to do.
Mr. Catfish Jim, the kicking
mule man is having a time now,
he says, living "seven days to a
week" and all those days looking
like Sunday. But I think Bro.
Cat h is given up the fishing business
to his two opponents, Bill
and Joe, as they live nearest the
fishing grounds.
Mr. Editor, two worthy young
gentlemen, J. and W. were taking
a mule-back ride this afternoon
and W. being so very perfect in
the art of riding young mules
thought he could tide 'sidewise'
and not hold hi* rein*, so on they
rode ami after a while the little
black mule got Will just wher<she
thought was the softest spot
in the road to dump him so his
bones would still be whole. She
stepped to the right and Will
went to the left catlop right Mat
on his hack in the 'featherbed'
like road as it had been raining
for two or three days on that
spot. His partner, riding a few
paces behind on the little bay
mule. Will put one eye on tho
road picKing a place to fall and
the other one backwards on the
little bay mule saying, at the
same time, hold that mule ofT of
me, John. John closed the 'throttle'

would be the worst year for
Hoods, famines, pestilences, wars,
disasters and dire calamities of
the nineteenth century" and
while the writer does not believe |
in present day prophets, the record
thin year as made in the things
named scorns to fully justify the
expectation of its further fulfilment.
The United States, or {
portions of it, is suffering terribly
from the recent Hoods, South
Africa is drenched with water,
there has been floods in the 'mow
possessions" ot Uncle Sam, while
wars and rumors of wars absorb
tiie atiention of the civilized and
a large part of the semi-civilized
globe. Famine and disease stalks
abroad over the larger portion of
the East. Cold has cut short the
fruit crop and many like things
have happened that every one
I will easily recall.

on being asked what the farmers
would do if it continued to rain,
"Go naked and drink branch
water" he replied Now while it
is devoutly to he hoped it will
not come to that, the farmer will
have no easy time this year,
especially should cotton drop, as

cents next fall, as he is having to
produce it on a ii.J cents basis.
It is reported that the land in
this section is considerably washed
from the recent rains.
There was no services at any
of our churches on last night and
we learn that there will he none
in town next Sunday or Sunday

Signals Displayed.
Washington, April 22?The
weather bureau tonight ordered
storm signals displayed on the
entire gulf coast from Ponsacola,
Fla., to Brownsville, Tex., near
the Mexican border line. On the
gulf coast the forecast for Mon
day and Tuesday is for fresh to
high winds from the southeast,
with thunderstjualls. Heavy rains
in the southern States, causing
further floods in that section, are
predicted lor the next two days.
