South Carolina now has a cotton
manufacturing c^ pacity equal
to the consumption of about 500,000
baloH per year. The average
productive capacity of the State
ia put at 1.000,000 bales, or about
500.000,000 pounds. The problem
that is now being worked out by
the Carolinians is how to so increase
the number of spindles as
to he able to use up all the home
supply of raw material. Evidently
there is room for further profitable
investments in southern
cotton mills, and, as the Charleston
News observes, it will take
the spinners a long time to catch
up with the planters.?Philadelphia
