est excitement witnessed on the
Cotton Exchange in recent years
prevailed today, transactions
reaching the enormous total of
about 1,000,000 bales. The shorts
were nvthing less than furious to
cover. At times, so great was the
excitement, brokers would be ofr

three points above the prices at
which others were offering to sell
it. While the demand was general
and largely from European
sources the feature of the local
market was the insatiable demand
from a Wall street concern, reputed
to be heavily short of
March contracts and also reputed
to have been a heavy seller yes
terday in keeping with a large
number of bearish dispatches
which they sent forth yesterday.
This concern bought enormous
quantities of cotton, especially
lor August delivery. At the best
point the market showed the tin
usual advance of 18(fl<39 points.
The record of transactions overllowed
the large board provided
tor their accommodation and an
auxiliary board was provided to
complete the record of the day's
transactions. Just before the close
there was a selling movement to
secure profits and the market finished
irregular and easy at a net
advance of 14(&24 points.
