LANCASTER'S OUTLOOK.
A few months ago our people
W*fi> "down in the inou'h" over
Lancaster's business outlook.
S'?me said the town was ruined,
an ! oliters said thev would leave
it if they con d. M ?nv of our
fanners got. 'he nou-m into ili?*ir
head** that they couhl do better
marketing their crop and huvino
their goods in other p aces, and
consequently much of the cotton
grown in this county was marketed
at other points. All were
alike blue over the consolidation
of the principal mercantile estahli-hmentsof
iho town.
The consolidation 1ms resulted
in the establishment of three
large concerns heie. the Lancaster
Mercantile Go , with a capital
slock of $100,000 00 ; tlio 1 lc.it h
Ruikin^ & Mercantile* Co. with
a capital stock of $50,000 00, and
1110 CIyburn-1 leath Mule Co,
with $i0,000.00 capital stock. So
that instead of the business of the
town heinjr rim l?v one concern,
as the people were at one time
afraid, we now have two strong
mercantile establishments that
are in no way connected, hut

proaching session of the legislature
to tret the dispensary plan
abolished. They will ask for "only
an opportunity to submit the
question to the people", ahdthen
when they tret that opportunity,
if they eet it all. they will turn
heaven and earth ?o carry it for
hitrh licence, or barroom*. Whiskey
would be u-ed in the election
a* it never wa* before, and
ever\ man whose vote could be
bought bv a few drinks of liquor
would he carried lor the barroom
plan.
But we have but little fear
that the 'e.'isl dure will medd'e
wi<h the di pensarv, save to make
some slight but important amendments.
The man who <1 ?e* not
bo'ieve ?h't the dispensary plan
is the best solution ol the liquor
question ever tried in this State is
hard to convince. Tiu**, there have
been some uir'y work by some ot
the dispensary officials, but that
is no argument against the law.
The tiling to do is to put such
men as some we have had. on
thh shelf an 1 let 'hem slay there,
and put jio?h1 hones' men in tin ir I
places. With slight improve- I
incnls. the law is all riirh'. and I
it should not I??? abolished hecau-e
a rascal f**'ts into ? fliee and mjiladinini-ters
it. The rased is the
jo ,c to he abolished and let the
: law stand.
If we knew that the future
! ma nan ment ot the di*pensar\
i would" ho no better than the
I past, we would preler the plan
t > that of high license as it
would he run. If there is rot
tenness in the dispensary where
the profits ot the business <jo to
tlie State, counties and towns.
wnai would there ho under the
high license system where the
profits would go into the pockets
of t he man running the business !
