He was a pale thin little fellow of fourteen years, although he look ed much younger than that. And he had come from New York in order to buy a turkey for Thanksgiving Day. Of course he could have purchased one in No v York, but he had very little money ? 1*88 thau a dollar?and a big policeman had told him ho could get j a turkey very much cheaper on ai farm than in a great city market. Jamie lived with his mother and his Bister Mary, and the baby Sunshine, in one of the great, high tenements on the East Side, whore poor people have their homes, and where they crowd in such great numbers that they never vet have been counted. Ilia father had been drowned at sea two years previous, and to make matters worse bis mother was sick in a hospital, and there was nobody to take care of the little girls*but himself. There was nobody else at the railroad station, but the conductor ot the train had told him that a man named Peter kept a farm down the road, and that he Bold turkeys and chickens. If. Haruly had he walked in the trontgate, however, when a great black dog, growling and snapping and showing his teeth, came bounding across the dooryard. Of course Jamie was frightened, and he climbed into the branches of an apple tree as quickly as if he were a monkey. The little boy, trembling with terror above in the branches, was so intently watching the dog that he did not notice the approach of a short, | i :t_ i uPHvny oum man witn bushy | hair and a thick, rod beard, whoi kicked the dog until the poor animal howled with pain and slunk I away. When the dog really had J gone, however, Jamie was not so frightened, and he called out: "Are you Mister I'eter?" "Yes, I am," the red-bearded 1 man answered, looking up in the: tree. Then he caught sight of the! boy's torn clothing and old shoes, | and he Haw into a passion, shout-1 ins: "Come out o' that, you young tramp! (iit down here quick, or I'll tear the tree up by the roots' and slam ye down !"' "Is?is this the way you treat all of your customers?" "What's that?" said l'oter. Your're welcome to all the fish you ketch there, and to all the turkeys ttiat bite your bait,' too !" "Can I, really?" the boy asked again, and Peter reDlied : "Yes, indeed !*' Jamie went from the farm straight to a store near the rail road, where he bought six lish hooks and a long line aud a ham boo rod. Then he purchased some crackers and cheese for supper, and before it was fairly dark he lay fast asleep in the haymow of a barn near by. Half an hour af ter he awoke next morning he was sitting in the branches of a tree on Peter's farm. He had cut the fishing line into five pieces, and on the end of each piece had fastened a hook baited, not with worm or grub, but with two or three kernels of corn. And the other ends of the five lines were tied hard and fast to the pole, the butt of which Jamie held firmly as he sat up there in the tree. Jamie happened to look far across the fields and saw Peter and his wife and his Bon drive oil" down the road before he had dared to try his plan. They were taking the black dog with them, too, and nobody was left at home. There wan a sudden tug at his pole, so heavy that ho was almost pulled out of the tree. Then there was another and another, until three turkeys and two chickens were squawking and llapping around on the ground, as if they I had suddenly gone crazy?for in swallowing a kernel ot corn eacli one of them had swallowed a fish-, hook. Jamie improved theoppor-l tunity to slide down to the j ground, still holding fast to his pole. Then lie wrung the neck of j one fowl after another and tied ' tlieni together, and, putting the heavy weight on his back, started tor tiie nearest railroad station as j fast as he c?u!d go. It was not very long after tins that a carriage pulled by two bay horses came down the road Irotn the opposite direction. A coachman sat on the box, and within the carriage war, a lady! dressed in black, which made the gray streaks hi her hair look al-j most white. Her right hand hold a single white rosebud. She had just placed others on a little grave, ller only child?her boy' with golden hair and blue eyes? had been laid to rest the day be- 1 fore Thanksgiving of the preceding year. Suddenly her carriage stopped j with such force that the horses! reared, and she heard her coach man cry out: "<^uit, I'eter ! Oi Mary and Baby Sunshine won have no Thanksgiving after all ! Weak and half sick, Jamie san to the couch, and buried his hea so the beautiful lady wouldn't ae him "cryinp and the tears runniu down his cheeks," as he woul have said. The beautiful lad stroke i iiis hair with her sof white hand, and spoke to hii soothingly, so pretty- soon h ceased sobbing, and told her a about himself, and about Mar and Baby Sunshine waiting fc their Thanksgiving dinner, an about his inotoer sick in the hO' pit a I up town. Now, the beautiful lady was very wise lady, and almost befni Jamie had finished she had orde ed her carriage in haste. The she directed one of the maid sei vants to make ready to start wit at once for New York, and she o dered a man to accompany then When thev stepped out of til ferry house in New Y -rk Jami and the beautiful lady and tli maid stepped inside of a carriage while the man sat outside next 1 the coach man, and thus they wei driven to the tenement in E dridge street, where Mary an Hady Sunshine were waiting. Soo after, the children sat down t such a meal hh the children ha rfot eaten for a long time. Befni they had finished the lady ha found out just where .Jamie mother was, and she wrote her letter saving she was going I take the little folks out to he home that night to spend Thank giving Day and would bring tbei in town to see her at the hospiti I)r.
