ALLIANCE DEPARTMENT. J. F. NISBET; Editor. Winter Farm Work. There is no doubt of the fact that there is a disposition on the part of many farmers to "let up" on farm work after the crops of the past year have been gathered and the fall sowing of small grain has been completed. On some farms the latter part of Novetn ber, the whole of December and often the greater part of January is considered a "slack time," and and hardly anything is done ex cept what is absolutely necessary. Whil? we strongly believe in the maxim that "all work and no plav ma Res Jack a dull boy," it is quite as true that if a man works only half or one-fourth of the time during any considerable period of the year he cannot reasonably expect to be prosperous. I see no harm, but much good, in all hands taking one-half day, and occasionally an entire day. from the ordinary work of the farm and devoting the time to recreation, fishing, hunting or visiting. I do not believe in everlasting sweat and toil and I think that a little "nonesense," as some would call it, now and then is better than "all work and no play." There are many kinds of farm work that can be better done between now and February 1st than at any other season of the year. DITCHING WET PLACES. There are few farms in the south on which there are not more or less extensive acres that are usually too wet for cultivation. In most cases these spots are exceedingly rich and with few exceptions could be made dry enough for cultivation by proper ditching and drains I am minded, in this connection, to say that on the farm under my direction there are three of these formerly wet places, each of about one acre in extent. The past year one of these was in cotton and the other in corn. The first yielded fully twice as much cotton and the second twice as much corn as any other acre on the place. They never fail even of a wet year, ami they always produce l'rotn 50 to 100 per cent, more whatever tho seasons may he. Now is the very time to ditch out these places, because tho so>! contains less water than at any other season. A box, or conduit, made of one inch plank, laid in a permanently wet ditch will last a lifetime Make it as follows: llave one inch plank sawed ?>: ripped two and one half inches wide for the Hide pieces of the box or pipe. Such pipes can be made with running joints and in continuous lengths of 50 and 100 feet, putting them together alongside the open ditches and then lay the long pipe in the bottom of the ditch, commencing with one end. Cover the pipe with six inches or more of any kind of rubbish, such ss old cotton stalks, weeds, pine tops, brush, etc.. and then return the I nn;i . The ditc ies should be dug not less than thirty inches deep (thirty-six would bo better) and with as much grades as the con formation of the surface will per mit, not less than one inch fall to I sixteen feet. In some locations a ; main drain of larger capacity ! than two and one-half square will be necessary, but not often. TKRRACINO. It is also a very favorable time for terracing. My experience of ten years is highly favorable to the expediency and efTectiveness of terracing all rolling land ex cept such acres as are very steep. These latter, when they are so steep that the fall is as much or more than three feet in twenty leer, going siraigni aown tne mil, should be put into permanent pasture or meadow, to be accas ionally sown in small grain. It is better, however, to keep them in Bermuda or other hardy grass. The old and first established rule of Icoating each terrace three feet perpendicularly below the one next above, seems to be gen erally accepted and approved, and probably is the best. The all important, or essential point in terracing, is to run the terrace lines very accurately on a perfect level, excepting that in running accross a sharp depression where a gully would be most likely to i form, 1 prefer to rai-e the grade j a little so as to make the terrace i bank at the angle or turn (pointling up hill) a little higher, say i four or live inches, than the general level.
