BOERS ARE STIRRING ALL

London, Nov. 13?4 :30 a. ni.? ^
. T
There are signs of greatly increased
Boer activity in Natal P
and along the western frontier. ?
All the dispatches tend to show 1
that the British are holding out a
ably. It is beginning to be proved
that the acquisition of artillery, a
which has destroyed the former ^
mobility of the Boer forces, has a
also failed to give them any com ^
pensating advantage. On the con- ^
trary the reserve is the case. It is
held here, that, if the Boers had *
not been hampered by the trans *
port of heavy guns and their res r
cue from tight places, Gen. Jou- ^
bert might ere this have been in 1
Pietermaritzburg.
It is believed that the Boer re- ^
treat will be made over the Dry- c
kensburg range into the Zout- *
pansberp district, where every
preparation for provisioning and
maintaining the Boers is said to
have been made for the last stand, |
and where it will be difficult to g
dislodge them. Already it is ru- a
mored that they are in straits for r
food around Lauysmith and may, 8
therefore, be obliged to abandon v
the siege. [
Dispatches from Estcourt indi- ]
cat-j there is no foundation for
thi fear that the Lyddite ammunition
at Ladysmith has been exhausted.
Some officers seen in J
Ladysmith indicate the Doer bombardment
has to some extent been
effective. Strong bids are being (3
made by the Boers for the eup- 1
port of the Cupe Dutch, but witn- r
out inucii success so lar. r roin t
Stormberg it is reported that the f
Free State forces are working 8
slowly toward Dordrecht, with a
view of attacking Queenstown
and cutting oil' the towns in the f
northern district of Cape Colony. ?

( Pariser was appointed. A com
( mittce of the directors reported
the capital stock from $75,000 to
. $45,000. A discrepancy in accounts
amounts to about $15,000.
t, The Exchange bank is that of
t which John A Benedict, who dis
; appeared from Greenville, S. C.,
was cashier Its troubles seem to
i explain his disappearance and to
make it plain that the man never
suspected of wrong was guiltv
and has gone away voluntarily
and hid himself. Even now Athens
people are slow to accept the
. explanation, but the figures on
> the books seem to leave no room
r for doubt on this mystery of
" months.
' How or why Mr. Benedict came
? short is not known yet; but the
1 facts that there was trouble in
I hi8 accounts and that he knew his
i bank was virtually wrecked is
too evident for dispute. People
in Athens now believe against
their inclination that Mr. Benek
diet went to Greenville with a
well laid plan in his head, disappeared
purposely and is now
alive and well.
