Hay? Positive Evidence Contradicting
Stories ot Disaster.
London, Nov. 6.?An immense
weight was lilted from the public
mind by a brief ollicial dispatch
published this morning by which
continental stories of a disaster at
Ladysmith were proved to be
false. Although the dispatch itself
relieved anxiety is more timed
in another direction as was indicated.
General White, instead
of sitting tight and acting wholly
on the defensive, persists in inak
ing sorties and risking another
Nicholsons disaster.
The movement of the Boers
into Cape Colony is beginning to
awaken the British fear that they
greatly underestimated the forces.
Even General Boiler's t * - k i*
not so easy as it was anticipated.
It is becoming apparent that
British calculations, based on the
loyalty of the population, i? hope
lessly as at sea or there has been
a serious leakage of Dutch sympathizers
from Natal and Cape
Colony. Otherwise there is no
accounting for the large forces of
burghers.
Th s war office is urged to have
more troops in readiness for
possible demands.
The evacuation of Colonso and
the reported withdrawal of from
Stormberg is still unexplained.
Prince Christian Victor, a
grandson of Queen Victoria and
a captain in the King's ltoyal
Rifles, and other officers have left
Cape Town for Ladysmith to re
place the dead aud wounded.
The Boer prisoners have been
taken on board the British cruis-1
er, Penelope, They number nine
officers and 180 men.

Neill's Estimate Again.
A very pretty controversy is

| Henry Neill, the famous cotton
; exDert of New Orleans, and Mr
I.John Hyde, the chief statistician
| of the (Government Department
of Agriculture. Mr. Neill in easily
the best known and most imI
portant private cotton expert in
the country, and his views may
he said to be controlling upon the
| English buyers of this staple. He
j has been out for Reveral months
with a prediction of auother
enormous cotton crop, based
chielly upon the favorable weath
er which, he declarsee, the grow

crop condition* reported by the
Government are not nearly as favorable
as that given by Mr.
I Neill, although the Government
I has made no definite estimate of
the crop, as Mr. Neill has. A long
1 letter has been published, writ
ten by .Mr. Hyde to a firm of cotton
merchants here, controverting
in detail Mr. Neilfs state
ments, chielly those referring to
the amount of rainfall in the cot
ton belt. To tills .Mr. Neill has
replied in a second proclamation.
People in the cotton trade are
naturally greatly interested in the
dispute. If the crop turns out to
he a short one there will lie a big
rise in prices, while if there is
another bumper crop prices will
probably recede. Prom the fact
