IN RE THE COTTON MARKET.

this market than in any of tint

ever before. We want to see it
that way again. Of course, we
do not ask our huvers to pay
more for the staple than it is
worth but we would like to see
cotton coming here from around
Monroe and Waxhaw as it did
last year. Whoop up the market
gentlemen, and start the cotton
to rolling this way. The trade is
going where the cotton goes un
less extra inducements are held
out bv merchants here, and if
many of the merchants here havej
bargains to offer, the people have
looked over the county papers in!
vain to find them. If the cotton]
from this county and west dies

Monroe and Waxhaw, as we are

It should be borne in mind by
those who have cotton to sell that
Monroe (and perhaps Waxhaw
too) buy cotton strictly on
grades, and that when they tindj
a real line bale they give all that j
bale is worth, perhaps a little
more, because th tf figure goes out
as the price the staple is bring- j
ing upon that market.
We do not seek to induce the
farmers to bring their cotton to

ets, hut we would direct their attention
to 1110 facts mentioned,

As we have said before, we do '
not see how Lancaster can afford
not to pay as much for cotton as'
other neighboring markets are
paving. Self interest would!
prompt them to that if tliev see
the cotton going to other places.

confirming the news that the
Lancaster cotton mill will increase
its capital from $150,000 to
$1,000,000 and add 50,000 to 50,
000 spindles to the 10,000 it al
ready has; also that orders foi
most of the machinerv has been
placed. Lancaster is in great
luck?in its man and its mtll.?

Col. Springs says he has made
the financial arrangements to
build a big mill, but that the arrangements
are conditioned upon
the raising of a certain amount of
money here. There should be lit
tie trouble to raise $75,000 or
$100,000 to get. northern people
to invest nine or ten times that
amount in our midst. If Lancaster
does not let them invest in
her midst some other community
will.
As a market, for cotton seed,
Lancaster is up with any town we
know of except Anderson, where
the two local oil mills are having
a war over the seed and are paving
away above the market value.
It is much like the cotton market
was here a year ago. These little
abnormal fights help out those
who have the stuff that the war
is over to sell. lint such things
can last hut a short while. Peo
pie cannot and will not long pay
m?>re lor a 'ommodity Ulan they
can realize for it when Ihey sell
it. Ambition to down or outdo
local competitors ma\ cause peo
pie to pay more for products than
they can even hope to realize.
But they will soon get enough ol
that kind of business, and the
market price will then be the
governing factor in buying. The
market price for cotton seed all
over the State is just about the
same, 15 cents a bushel. The oil
mills seem to realize that the cot
ton crop is short. If those who
manufacture the cotton could bo
brought to realize the same and

unfortunately, the cotton market
is largely made hy Liverpool,
while the market lor seed is made
entirely hy the South.
- The time is rapidlv coming
when the Smith will have much
more influence in fixing the cot

heretofore. It's influence is felt
now since there are so many
Southern mills to he supplied
And as the mill- multiply, that
influence upon the cotton market
will become more and more
decided.
