Saturday, Sept. 2, 189ft. THE TRACKS OF DOGS LEAD TO THE DEAD MAN. Ed Hayes Murdered and Body Hidden in the River. J. A. H. in The State. While walking yesterday on the farm of Joseph McKinney, near Tigerville, Luthur McKinney made the discovery of a human head severed from the body and numerous dog tracks were uear the place where the awful discovery was made. He reported the ghastly find to some of his neigh bors at once and they followed ?' the dog tracks to the river not far away, where they found a man's leg protruding above the water, and on further investiga tion they brought up the headless body with only the stump of the neck where the head belouged. It waB at once believed that the body was that of Ed Hayes, a farmer who lived in that neighborhood, and who disappeared suddenly and mysteriously three or four weeks ago. Search had been made for Hayes and no trace of him was discovered unless the headless trunk belonged to him The dogs had eaten the flesh off the face so that it could not be identified, and other means had to be found to prove that Hayes' fate was made known. Magistrate Gullick was notified of the occurrence and organized a jury of inquest, which was in vestgating the matter to-day. Mr Gullick could not be reached uu til night, and he Bays over the 'phone that the inquest was adjourned late this afternoon after finding a verdict to the effect that the man was Ed Hayes and that he came to Iiib death by a pistol shot at the hands o' James Sudduth. The investigation was tedious and the evidence somewhat vague, but the jury was sat isfied that Ed Hayes received his death wound from Sudduth, with whom he was on unfriendly terms. One witness testified that. Sudduth said he shot twice at Hayes and the second time he shot to kill. The dead man was shot in the back from his right side, and the ball went through his liver and lodged in the left breast. Hayes was identified by means of his clothing, and each garment was inspected and clear ly proven. No papers were found on the bodv, and the pocket* of his clothing were empty. Hayes disappeared on the 8th of A tic.nut from his home, which is not more than a quarter of" a mile from Tiger river, and the body wa- lying in the edge of the stream j 1-0 where a ditch empties into it, covered with sand and corn stalks. The skull was some distance down the river, and the men who made the search waded the stream until they found the body. Sudduth ia at home sick with fever, and his physician reported his temperature this afternoon .it 101. Magistrate Uullick issued a warrant for his arrest immedate ly after the verdict was rendered, and his constable placed Sudduth in custody without delay. The magistrate is enquiring of the sheriff over the 'phone what to do with his prisoner, but as vet has received no instruction*.
