On* Year $1.00 Six Months SO cts Three Months 25 cts In Advance. # Wednesday, Aug:. 9, 1899. CLEAN OUT THE STREAMS. Landowners should not overlook or neglect the fact (hat they are required, by a recent statute, to remove, during the month of August, from the streams llowing through their lands all "trash, trees, rafts and timber.'' Those neglecting to comply with this law are liable to a fine of not less than $5 nor more than $50; or imprisonment for not less than 10 days nor more than 30. Any individual who may see proper to do so, has the right to proceed against landowners who fail to comply with the statute above referred to, ami to clean out the streams that run through the landA of such persons, and then to collect the necessary expense out of t he land. This is a wise law, and its observance would prevent much of the overflow of the streams and the consequent washing of the .lands and damage to the crops, not only by the water froml the overflow of t lie streams, but by the timbers, brush and rafts that are borne down the streams ^ | and over the low lands by the water. A better time than August could not have been lixed lor this work. He-sides being a leisure time with landowners generally, the streams are low, and the work of removing the prescribed obstructions to the water is easier done than at almost any other month of the year. If it is necessary to get into the water to remove the obstructions (and in many cases it will be) it will be less dangerous to health than at | any other season of the year. What the Dispensary l*ai?l to! Lancaster. The county of Lancaster re reived the following sums from dispensary last year?from .Inly 1, 1.898 to .June .'JO, 1S99: Lan-j caster dispensary, 1st quarter., .*89.-14; '2nd quarter. +'40S.S5 ;; 3d quarter, $293.1 s ; Itli (juarter. $ 1 On.SO ; total. $9s7..vi. Kershaw dispensary, 1-t (juar ter. $-10.(14; 2nd quarter. $ I M .5(1: 3rd (|iiarter. 153.79; Ith quarter,I $121.*21 ; total, 512.20. Hoth, $1499 5.'!. This was used to pay | the ordinary county expenses?to pay jurors, witnesses, etc. A like amount was paid to the towns j in which the dispensaries are] located. From the State dispensary $5224.42 was received which was divided among the Dublin vehfxds- -i I ?.t ' a * - mmn %% ,vmmi v/i *07-23/.):, received for county and school purposes, and * 1 4H'.i.r>:{ hy the towns of Lancaster and Ker shaw. During the civil war, as well as in our late war with Spain, diarrhoea was one of the most trouble some diseases the army had to contend with. | In many instances it became chronic and the old soldiers still stiller from it.
