Mr. Claude Crowell, foreman, is already hero and as soon as suf ficient lumber arrives be pushed as rapidly as possible. ?The secretary of navy has disposed of several vessels pur chased by the government for naval purposes during the Span ish war. They are no longer needed hy the navy. ? Chester was prepared to entertain 8,000 people; but on account of the rain there was not more than 5,000 visitors attended. Everything, it is said, passed off very nicely. (Of course, there were Eomo who were disappointed? not fully understanding the arrangements, they expected free entertainment, and in this they were disappointed. From all accounts, Chester handled the reunion very nicely. ? Rev. R. J. Cook with a party of gentlemen from Taxahaw visited Landsford Wednesday on a fishing expedition, and while seining in the river near the shoals, Mr. Cook came near getting drowned. Will Faulkner, colored, was engaged to go along wiui the party to help with the seine, they pot into deep water when Mr. Cook, who had hold of one end of the seine noticed the darkey go under, he prompt j ly went to his rescue, and at the jeame time Mr. Jim Robinson came upon the opposite side,and when | the darkey came up Mr. Cook attempted to take hold of his arm when he threw it around Mr. Cook and both went under. Mr. C. succeeded in pettinp loose from him and again tried to help him, |?this time the darkey succeeded in pettinp both arms around Mr. C. and they went under the | second time. Mr. C. pot loose! from him again, and at this juncture Mr. C. took cramp in his left leg, which rendered him unable to further assist the darkey. He called for help and was taken out of the water. The dnrkev floated on down stream a few feet to shallow water where ho was rescued and taken ashore, and after being rolled on the ground for some time was soon all right again. As soon as he got able to talk, he said that he could not swim, this fact was not known by any of the party or doubtless they would not have allowed him to go with them. M. Sadler. Mrs. E. M Sadler died at her home on Main street Thursday night. July 27th, Irom efl'ects of old age. The summons that | ended her earthly sufferings came at 11 o'clock and she passed peacefully over the river to that eternal home to which no traveler returneth. Mrs. Sadler was born Govern her 20th, 1S13, and was therefore in the SGth year of her age. She was married to Mr. B. F. Sadler Juno 5th, 1834. To this happy union live children were horn, all of which have passed away. She was left a widow October 24th, 1840, and was the last of eight children of Col. J. II. Wither HJJUUI1. Mrs. Sadler was one of the ori ^inal organizers of the Lancaster Presbyterian church, and possibly her son, Mr. James 11. W. Sadler, was the first child baptized bv Rev. J. II. Thornwell. She was for many years the organist of the church, and one of the teachers in the Sabbath school ot that time. She was an excellent christian lady and was faithful in all her duties. In youth, she was noted for her beauty, and I)r. Mittag painted her pot rait for a fancy sketch. Her funeral was conducted by Rev. Chalmers Fraser. assisted bv her nephew, Rev. J. II. Thornj well, D. D., and Rev. 11. B. I'ratt, a former pastor, after which her remains were laid to rest in the old cemetery. Lancaster*a Market.
