Greetings and Farewells at Cab

of Settling Alaskan Honn

Washington,July 25.?The feu
tares of the cabinet meeting to
day were the farewell ofSecaetarv
Alger and the presentation of his
successor, Mr. Root.
Ilis greeting was pleasant and
cordial. ' lie remained but a few
minutes, leaving shortly aftei
noon to catch the 12:45 train foi
New York. When he lelt the
White House-he said he would
return and assume charge of the
war department Aug. I. Shortly
after Mr. Knot had left Secretary
Alger made his adieus, lie shook
hands with the president and
each member of the cabinet. In
saying farewell there were many
kindly expressions of regret and
exchanges of well wishes.
The cabinet remained in ses^
sion about three quarters of an
hour after Gen. Alger's depart
ure.
There was a general cleaning
up of little odds and ends, pre
paratory to the president's do
parture tomorrow. The mail
topic discussed was the Alaskan
boundry dispute. Secretary Hay
explained the status of the direct
negotiations now in progress bo
tween himself and Mr. Tower, the
British charge, and said that he
was not without hope that this
vexed problom would be solved
by direct negotiations. (Jreal
Britian now seems willing to con

States to give Canada the priv
ileges of a port of entry into the
dominion while retaining abso

of a prosition that the hope 01
a settlement now hovers. Th?
speeches of Sir Wilfred Lauriei

incidentally but no serious at

ONE PLAIN RIGHT j
CUBANS NOW DEMAND. I
llabana, July 25.? A recent
meeting of veterans of the Cuban
war of independence is causing
considerable comment. Mayiu
Rodriguez presided at the meeting
at which the organization
declared itself to be the only
legal representative of the Cuban
revolution. A resolution was
adopted demanding that the United
States make formal declara|
tion ot its intentions and supposed
rights based upon the resolution
passed by congress in April. 1898.
The Cuban census commissioners
recently appointed were criticised,
speakers saying they were mere
nonentities and unknown men,
in whose work tho public would
have no confidence and that a
census so taken would be unacceptable
to the Cubans. Gen'l.
Andrado said the United States
was fast sucking Cuba dry.
Gualberto Gomez said if President
McKinley would not consider
an appeal tavorably, the
Cubans knew what steps to take
to rid the island of the heel of
foreign imposition.
Messrs. Collazo, Gualberto Gomez,
Cisneros and Andrade were
appointed a committee to present
a memorial to the authorities at
Washington. This committee is
composed of men antagonistic to
everything done by the Americans
here and who never fail to
utter in print infiamatory remarks
when the opportunity offers
regarding Cubans holding
otlice under the United States, al
leging thut these offi eeholders do
