reached Manila containing the
speech which Aguinuldo made
during the recent celebration at
Tarlae, of the anniversary of the
proclamation of Filipino inde
pendence. In substance it was as
follows:
"Filipino, beloved daughter of
the ardent Sun of the Tropics,
commended by providence to the
care of noble Spain, be not un
grateful to her salute who warmed
you with the breath of her own
culture and civilization.
ult is true she ought to crush
thy aspirations for independence,
as a loving mother opposes sep
aration forever from the daughter
of her bosom. This but proves
the excess of affection and love
Spain feels for thee, Filipina !
Delicate flower of the east, scarcely
eight months weaned from the
breast of thy mother, thou hast
dared to brave a great and powerful
nation such as is the United
States, after barely organizing
ana disciplining thy little army.
Yet we reply, we will be slaves
to none, nor allow ourselves to
be deceived bv soft words. Let
us continue to defend our fatherland
until independence is as
sured, for this is justice. We
shall see at least, that the grtat
American nation will aeknowl
edge the right which is 011 our

Monroe, that America is for Americans,
is not forgotten. Just so
we allirm that the Philippines are

volunteer regiment from Manila,
arrived here tonight. The vessels
were sighted this alt< rnoon
and soon the shrieking of steam
whistles, 1110 clanging of hells and
the tiring of cannon announced
that the lirst batch of returning
volunteers Irotn Manila were
nenrin^ the shores of California.

their way to the docks.
Scores of vessels hearing state,
municipal and federal oflicials,
ltovernor (Jeer and stall ot Oregon
and hundreds of others met
the incoming transports.
As the transports slowly steamed
up the harbor the soldiers
gathered in excited groups on the
decks, and some climbed the rig
ging, where they shouted and
cheered like mad.
The transports were boarded
by quarantine ollicers. It is
doubtful whether the Oregon volunteers
will be allowed to land
in San Francisco before going to
theii homes.
