Those outside the building say there were successive explosions, and that the last ones were so sharp and violent that they must have come from souvenir cartridges or other explosives. Mrs. Dickins' death was undoubtedly Caused by the explo sion, and it is not believed she suffered any from the flames which succeeded. The rescuers were led to the spot by Plumber Vaughn, who was himself badly burned about the face and arras. He received these burns in an heroic effort, to rescue Mrs. Dickins. lie and his- assistant had entered the room in which Mrs. Dickins sat cleaning some rugs, when the explosion happened. The two men were thrown down by the explosion. As soon as they foniul their feet, Vaughn seized Mrs. Dickins and attempted to drag her from the room, j The dames were, however, so j tierce that he was compelled to | drop her and llee tor his own life, lie thinks that she was then dead. The explosion was of such force that it rent the stone steps in Iront of the house. The plumbers say that considerable quantities of the gasoline had apparently been spilled upon the lloor The most sorrow I ill ?cene occurred in connection with the recovery and ulent ilicat ion ol Mrs. liickins' body. In the midst of the irreat est cxcit ment the first report was that the blackened body in the upper story was that of the wife of a distinguished admiral of j I'm- navy. He was summoned j fro in his home nearby and not only doteote 1 the mistake, but also gave the lirst detinito inforniation that Mrs. Diekins was the one so horribly burned. Word was sent to the navy department, where v:apt. Dear Mr. Editor :?A tra ditional story says that in the long ago at or near the Great Falls en the Catawba River, in Cheater county, S. C.,above Rocky Mount, there lived an Indian chief whose only daughter perished in the tails and who, it is said, appears again every May during the evening's twilight in the midst of the spray. Ilence, an annual picnic is held there on the first. Saturday in every May, in which the cit izens of Lancaster, Chester, Fair field and Kershaw alike par ticipate and for the past four or five years there has been a picnic at t4ie falls on the fourth of July. Any one feels free when they get out Irom under the care of teachers and from the walls of a college lile. Everthing is looking very well but we are needing rain again ; people above and just below got nice rains last week, but we were passed by. Gardens are still looking nicely ' and ehiekens are large enough to fry. There was many a chicken's head cut ofl' for the picnic. I hear the Luncasterians had a tine : time at the Blackjack picnic.
