Wednesday. .June 28, 18fM>. ALMOST A RATE RIOT. Policeman and Negro Editor Met in Tampa for a Duel ; Negro Killed. Tampa, Fla., June 24?Tampa came very near having a Wilmington. N. C., race riot repeated here to dav. Last week a negro woman was arrested by Officer Woodward for refusing to be vaccinated. The woman resisted arrest and a t us sle was the result, the officer finally winning. M. J. Christopher, a negro newspaper man who runs the Laborer's I'nion Recorder, severe lv criticised the officer. allti?liri<r to him as a sneaking tramp. Today the men met by appoint merit in a negro restaurant and a fight ensued, the officer heating the negro's head to almost a .jelly with his pistol The negro pulled his gun when the officer made his approach ?>nt by some manner it was discharged, the ball taking effect in his own abdomen and lodging in his spi nal column, from which he died at 0 o'clock tonight.
