It behooves everyone to keep a
sharp lookout now for counterfeit
money. A considerable
amount of dollars and half dollars
have been circulated in
Atlanta within the last few das's.
(iovernor Kllerbe after an illness
of about. Jive months died at
his home last Friday evening
shortly after eight o'clock. He
made a brave light for life, but
the end came, as was expected,
having grown gradually worse the
past few weeks. To his bereaved
family we extend our heartfelt,
sympathy.
Something Should be Done.
The increase in the number of
Confederate pensioners in this
State, which absorbs the increased
appropriations and keens the
average annual payment to each
pensioner down to a grotesquely
insufficient figure has naturally
caused surprise. Yet I he ordi
nary citizen, knowing that the
apportionment of the fond had
been left to men supposed to
have the deepest interest in promoting
its just distribution, has
been loth to sn?peot fraud. The
statements of <'apt. W. D. Star
ling before C imp Hampton night
before last, show, however, that
grave abuses exist, imposition h'?ing
freely used to secure pensions
for persons not entitled to them.
The camp, to its credit, promptly
took up the ma'ter and will
press the State veterans, at. their
it\>\>i a,n-ii111^ meeting in ? -nearer,
to take remedial action. We
hope the movement will he aided
by other camps. For the credit
of the veterans themselves as
well as the benefit of the deserv
ing pensioners the abuse of the
State's bounty should be promptly
stopped.?The State 4.

porarily Closed Down.
The executive committee of the
local hoarn of health, consisting
of Dr. Boozer, Dr. Hahcock, Mr.
J. S. Muller and Dr. Thomas, held
a conference with ('apt. Oraham,
- C m. I * i - '
m ine penitentiary nosiery null,
on the outbreak of meningitis.
There have been ten cases of the
disease, one new case developing
Friday night, and all ??f them
have occurred among convicts
employed in the hosiery noil. At
least 90 per cent of convicts in
the yard are employed in the
mill, and it has been decided to
shut it down. The placo was
completely disinfected yesterday,
bi-chloride of mercury, carbolic
acid and whitewash being freely
used in every portion of the build
ing. Persons working in the mill
who live outside will he prevented
from corning in contact with
other people as far as possible.
The null will probably resume
work tomorrow.?The State.
