A Former Commander Writes a
Letter to "The Hoys."
The following letter has been
received bv Mr. David Moore
from Maj. \V. S. Dunlap,the major
in command of McGowan's Sharpshooters
during the civil war.
Maj. Dunlap now lives at Little
Rock, Ark. The letter is published
that the survivors of his
command may see it and comply
with the suggestions made therein
:
"Unless providentially detained
I will pass through Columbia on
my way to Charleston on afternoon
Greenville train. May Dth

of your section who may be going
down, to join me at Columbia.
You might issue a call for a rally
of the Sharpshooters at that time,
and perhaps some might heed
the call who otherwise would not

Tillman and MeLanrin Meet Here
and Talk Over Census Appointments.

Tobacco.
Senators Tillman and McLaurin
spent last night in the city.
The senior senator, as is his custom.

Hunch, while Mr. McLaurin registered
at the Columbia. They

Oapt. Hunch's last night.
Senator Tillman laughingly
said that he thought it strange
that he was beset by newspaper

leave this morning lor Florence.
The object of his visit to that section
is to study the culture of
tobacco.
Senator Tillman and a number
of his neighbors at Trenton have
clubbed together to experiment
with tobacco planting and culture,
and he is now looking into the
matter for the club. About 50 or
00 acres will be planted this season.
When questioned about his <
meeting with Mr. McLaurin, Sen i
ator Tillman said that it was *
merely incidental. Senator Mc 1
Laurin was coming to Col
umbia, and they agreed to
meet. and discuss the out- 1
look in regard to the ap
pointments of census officials.
The census taking will not begin ^
until July of next year, but there
are even now mauv applicants
for these positions. As has already
ceen stated there will be
six districts, each in charge of a 1
director, and lor every community
whose estimated population is
4,000 there will be an enumerator.
The census director general,
Mr. Merriam, is a Republican. ^

by civil service examination, but ^
will appoint ''business men."
