LETTER FROM DWIOHT. ,
Dwight, S. C., April 11.?Mr.
Editor?Will you please allow (
space for a line or two from (
Dwight ?
The health of this section is (
very good. 1
Farmers of Dwight are badly v
behind with their farm work, on }
account of the rain and cold ^
weather. The rain-fall is said to i
be heavier in Dwight this spring
than has been for several years.
We have had rain everv few days
s
for the last two months; conse- (
quently the farmers have not
been able to do much plowing (
yet. However, they have been g
doing the best they could under 1
the circumstances. And when '
the rain holds up there is going '
i . . v
to be one of the awfulest stirs in ,,
Dwight t It a t has ever been known. e
Kvery animal tliat, can pull a s
plow wi.ll be put in the field. <1
The putting out of fertilizers has ^
not begun yet, although Mr. E. B. j
Lin tile has planted 15 acres of
corn.
Our farmer. Mr. 1). A. Funderburk,
has sold his cotton ; but
r
still has several fine pigs for sale.
Our school, Buford, is still on
a boom, and is likely to continue
as long as the bad weather. Bnc
ford has enrolled 70 scholars this
session, and the general attendance
has been remarkably good.
Both parents and scholars are
well pleased with their teacher,
Professor T. II. Thompson, and
try to show him all respect and
honor that is due to so faithful a
teacher. And he is kind and
courteous to his scholars, from I _
the largest to the smallest. We
r
all love him and feel grateful to
him for his past work, which he ^
has so acceptably performed.
Hush your fuss! Dwight has ,
three large stores, two commodious
churches, one postoflice, '
one parsonage, a full outfit of
machinery works, and a large
farm bell. We will have some
system of work now. Kev. H?
was out doors the other evening ,
, , , d
just jumping up and down and
laughing as if he was most tickled
to death, and someone passing,
stopped to inquire as to what the
excitement was. llis reply was,
"Mr. U? is ringing his bell to P
let his servants know that the w
sun is down." T
The Buford boys went down to v
play ball with the Wild Oat boys 11
on their holiday at the closing of v
the Carnes Schoolhouse school. r
But they, knowing how well the ^
Buford hoys could play, kindly 11
refused to play against them. So /
we chose up indiscriminately and c
had a delightful game.
I'eace and good wishes to all. P
V. A. LINOLK.

I. General Wheaton is preparing
to punish the Filipinos.
e The military gunboats Napidun
and Langua de Bay have succeeded
in entering the Santa Cruz
1 river and have captured a small
a unarmed Spanish gunboat and
^ three launches which they disv
covered there.

I he Snarl In Samoa.
s
That is a very bad state of afii
fairs in Samoa and may easily
v lead to a worse condition nearer
B these shores. We are having the
folly of undertaking to regulate
' distant savages brought home to
k, us. The islands are hardly woith
. picking up. yet we find three
t great nations so involved in the
feuds among the natives that the
way to a peaceful settlement is
most difficult,
t The responsibility for present
- conditions is not easy to place.
Unquestionably the representa1
tives of Germany have been tact
less and offensive; vet there is
* i
> enough of hullheadedness to he ,
r charged to the American and
s British agents to account for
- much of the trouble. Nobody
e out there appears to have tried
2 to settle matters in a spirit of con
filiation, or even to await insirucI
lions lrorn higher authority. The
S contentious spirit of the Samoans
has infected the foreigners set
3 over them, and if we don't get
s into a war it will not he because
? they haven't laid a sufficient .
i foundation tor it.
s
? The ugly feature of the inter- .
} national situation is the hitter
feeling between England and ,
' Germany. Commercial and col- r.
3 onial rivalries have brought this
' about, and Germany now feels
that Lord Salisbury is using his
' new American partnership to
