cotton, land, labor and capital.
If the cotton planter or producer
was the only factor, he
could undoubtedly reduce cot ton
acreage, and increase the aerenire

Yet no appeals are made to the
merchant and landlord to aid the
lien cotton planter to reduce
acreage. Why are they not appealed
to? Is it simply to divert
attention from the true cause of
the low price of cotton that a reduction
of acreage is advocated \
Over-production is not the cause
of the low prices of cotton. It i?
under consumption oi cotton goods
caused by the demonetization ol
silver, which depressed the industries
of the country and impoverished
the industrial classes, l lu
average price of 45 principal commodities
declined one-halt from
1873 (when silver was demonetized)
to 1890. The fall in priet
was caused by a reduction in tin

not the; overproduction of these
commodities. The world's pro
duction of wheat from 18!) 1 te
1896 inclusive did not vary 5 pei
cent, a year during that period
Yet what declined in price Iron
