Ono day in the early part of
last week llamp Mobley, a danI
gerous negro, who lives at llock

dillieulty with Mr. .J. J. White, a
merchant at Leslie's in York v
county about some payments on
a sowing machine which llamp
had bought of Mr. White.
Blows wore passed and I lamp
, was about to get the bettor of Mr.
I White, had liitn down and was
beating him at a lively rate with
brass knm-ks when Mrs. White
ran out to intercede for her husband.
Iiamp dealt her a blow
in the face. Mr. White ran into
the house for hi3 gun, but llamp
had disappeared, leaving his mule
and hat behind. A posse was
soon organized and wont in search

They had sworn out a warrant
in the mean-time, and it was sent
i over to SherilV ('lyburn who, with
! his deputies, made a search for
i him Wednesday in the Waxhaws.

Thursday night the Sheriff
started out on another search for
him. accompanied by deputies
Wilson and Moore ami Constables
Sims and Caskey. The
Sheriff found one person who had
seen Hamp that day. lletook his
force to a house where llamp was
known to frequent, and there they
found him. He had the doors
; barred, had an axe and a double
barrel breech loader with plenty
ol cartridges, and he defied the
posse and said, cursing, that he
would kill the first man who
opened the door.
