house we pass on the right is the
little homo of old Mr. and Mrs.
Billings,where they lived in quiet
content for nearly fifty years.
The old blacksmith shop stands
much as it did then. Here old Mr.
Billings and Billy Garsido beat
an "anvil chorus" day in and day
out for many years. Billy would
sing from morning till night.
Sometimes the old man would
tiro of his music and he wouuld
begin beating on the anvil with
all his might. Billy would sing on

would be heard, which proclaimed
him conqueror.
On the opposite corner lived
old Mr. Joe Martin and his twin
grand daughters, lie was a native

The old man had some odd fancies,
one of which was, to have his
colli11 made several years before
he died, lie had it placed under j
his hod and every now and again i
lie would lie down in it to see. he |

In like manner it follows that
the importance o( soil is more and
more being recognized. Soils are ,
now being fed in an intelligent i
manner, and the needs of tho j

with their different capacities,are
now known as ever before.
Of course experience is nll|
right?in some important particulars
it is indispensable?but the!
farmer who in these days depends |
i>n his individual experience will,
as a rule, be left far behind in
the race.
There are certain fundamental
principles ? principles touching
vitality at every point tho liest ol

could not he reached in the whole j

famaliar hy the host current
teaching to every intelligent
young farmer, at tin very begin-j
ning of his cursor. Not to have
those advantages from the start
is to be handicapped all the way.
Mind, rather than muscle,(arming
is the idea. Roth, of course,
are needed ; but if the latter is
all there is to it, or if it is the
ruling element, the end is sure to
he farming in the old-time rut
way. This is the rule, and it is
not invalidated hv the exceptions.
These facts figure in all the walks.
In present day farming all the
conditions should be taken into
account. For what crop or crops
is the soil naturally best adapted 1
IIow about the market for the
crop for the growth of which the
sol 1 ik best suited ? What is the
best way of maintaining the fertility
of a given soil and steadily
improving it ?
As tho countries that provide
the markets for farm products get
more and more densely populated
thoso are questions that moro and
more will be up for solution, and
so more a ad more there will be
place for the capable and cultivated
in farming.
