Very little hope in now entertained
for the arrest of Constable
Xewbold, who is wanted for the
murder of Mr. Turner, and it is
believed that ho will never again
be soon in this state. Iu the first
place, Nowhold is an expert detective
himself, and is especially
engenious in making up] his (lis-;
guise, and, therefore, had great
advantage in making his escape
and eluding arrest,and in the second
place,the $250 reward offered
by Governor Ellerbe for the murderer's
arrest is no incentive for
anyone to tackle so desperate a
character.
Governor KUerbe said yesterday
that ho would have offered a
reward earlier but for the fact
that ho was "fooled" by the telegram
from Mr. Thomason,holding
out the uceidout plea.
Constable IJowie,who was present
at. the meeting and who is to
be tried a-J accessory, lias made
the following statement to the)
Spartanburg Herald: I

ordered here by the governor Rev- i
oral days ago,and proceeded with
a wagon ami mules and employed ;
three men, LaFar, Mcfaskill and
myself. The reason of this, wasj
that there have been many com j
plaints recently of whiskey being)
sold in this county .Greenville and j
Pickens counties. We w ere camp-1
ing out and driving up into two
squads, LaFar and McCaskill
guarding the road from Whituey,
stationed near the Htandpipe,Newbold
and myself were up on the
Howard Gap road at the colored
church. Tuesday night we were ,
in the church building. Later on,
about 4 o'clock in the morning, it
