The lleet of river boats will be largely increased in the spring by (lie addition of several boats front Taconta and the building of others on the liver. s TIMK, IJY OVKKLANI) KOUTKS. To make the trip front the landing at the loot of the mountain passes to Dawson, takes about live weeks, under ordinary conditions. The trip has been made in twenty-one days, but, however, without carrying anything more than a camp outlit and sufficient supplies for the journey. Under ordinary condi uons a siop oi several (lays nas to be made at Lake Linberman, by the Dyea and Skaguay routes, to build boats for the journey down the lakes and rivers to Dawson, over 500 miles, which is made in from six to twelve days. HOW TO OFT OVER THK PASSES. ^ Chilcoot pass from Dyea is not passable for horses, and supplies are taken over on sleds drawn by dogs and men, or packed over on the backs of miners or Indians. ^ The sleds are made in Tacoma, of U n l- ? vtioici ii in* i\ui > , (iiu i hmiu, IS inches wide, 8 inches highland weigh about .'JO pounds. The runners are steel shod and the knees iron braced. Two! or three large dogs will handle a I sied.aiul six or eight make a fast team. White pass, from Skaguay, is passable, in a limited way, fori pack horses, as well as for dogs and sleds. From Fort Wrangle the river steamer Caledonia, of Hudson Bay line, runs to Telegraph ' Creek, a distance of 130 miles. The river is comparatively safe. ^ A Tacoma line ot steamers will be put on the river in the spring. There is also a trail up the river i.? for pack horses. c 'l OVEH TIIE DIVIDE. tl h The portage from Telegraphic Creek to Ilotalinqua lake, about | a 120 miles, is through a partly ,, wooded country, somewhat roll - j ^ ing but not rough.
