LOCAL MATTERS Items of Interest Picked Up Here and There by Our Reporter. Mr. J. W. King and Miss Ma mie Alford were in the city last night from Dillon. Miss Olive DaVis has returned from Bostick where she had been visiting her sister. Miss Lucy Korthcross/ of West Florence, is quite ill at her home with consumption. Mrs. George Brothers and baby left this morning for a few days visit to relatives in Lake City. Mr. J. C. Kirkhm, of Macon, Ga., is in Florence visiting rela tives. Mr. A. B. Jordan, the Mayor of Dillon, was in town today on bu siness. His Honor stated that several cases of small pox broke out in Dillon several days ago. The board of health took prompt measures, and every case is now isolated and under control. Mr. H. E. Stone, who succeeded Mr. Geo. Burnett in the tinning business, arrived yesterday from Timmonsville, where he had been for several days closing up his bus iness affairs. Mr. Stone expects to take,charge of his new place on Monday next. Several rafters fell on Harvy David, colored, knocking him senseless today, while tearing down the old Allen residence. I Mr. Bounds the, contractor has decdied to tear down the old Al len residence, instead of removing it as was intended. Bev. Dr. Fitch, the Baptist Evangelist, left town this a. m. en route - for Latta, where he will conduct a series of igeet- ings. ' # Mr. R. M. Met-own is fepme for today and tomorrow. He says he will have to return to Columbia as Secretary of State Gantt is confin ed to his room, and that his pres ence is necessary at the State house. Miss Sophie Kuker plays in Danville, Va., tqnight. She will be in North Carolina next week, and will play in Florence on April 4th. Messrs. A. M. Kittrell, J. H. Saunders, R. C. Lannon and Dr. N. W. Hicks returned today from their fishing trip on Jeffreys creek. Mr. J. S. Fair, principal of Eb- enezer school is spending the day in the city. A large concourse of people at tended the funeral of Mr. Thomas H. Johnson of Mars Bluff, at the Fraternal cemetery today. About fifty Masons assembled at Hamp ton lodge No. 204 at eleven o’clock and marched to the cemetery, where the services were conducted by Worshipful Master J. W. Mc- Cown with Masonic rites, Rev. London, March 19.—The Cen tral News has a dispatch from the St. Petersburg’s correspondent in which Plehve, the Russian Min ister of the Inferior is quoted as expressing the most friendly sentiments regarding Anglo-Rus- sian relations. The Minister is quoted as saying- “There is no reason why trouble should arise between England and Russia.” ^The operations are on the seas, though if there were others on land there is room in the world for the elephant and the whale. Brunson, the popular representative of »the News and Courier is spending a few days with relatives in Florence. , Sparks’ show r was a success. They had a great crowd. Some of the children w ho had been so de lighted with the ponies, the mon keys, the baby elephants, and “Cyclone” the wonderful mule, did not wish to leave at all. Mr. Sparks gives the best show for the price that travels, he keeps such order as to make it a safe and en tertaining place to go. He does all he says he will and more. At least the children say that he does and the children know\ The train ing of the goats, dogs and monk eys was wonderful. It was the same with the baby elephants, lions and monkeys, who were fat and sleek, and saucy because they know- soimieh.
