WINWS AND HEaAD rUZ&IEJD TRI '-2 -DY 3 NEWS AND HERALD CO. TEmS, IN ADI ': One Year, - so SiC hleaths. - - - - .io WTNNSBORO, . C. Saturday, December 1 1900 EXPIEIlMENT WITH WHEAT We are in receipt of a balletin from Clemson College which contains some practical suggestions in the growing of wheat. As all farmers do not get these bulletins, it is perhaps a service for the newspapers to disseminate the result of experiments as much as pos sible, and we shall make a brief sum mary of this one. A compact soil should be selected, and while thorough drainage isinecessary, most of the soil In Fairfield Is naturally sufficiently drained. Clay loam is found to be the best for wheat. Sandy loam under laid with clay subsoil will give good results. Increased production, it has been found, invariably follows thor ough pulverization of the surtace and deep and thorough preparation. Your success twill depend largely upon the time that you sow. You must not sow before frost, for if sown early enough for the seed to vegetate before frost, the plants are liable to the at tack of the Hessian Ay. This fiy de posits its eggs upon the leaves, and as soon as hatched the larval crawl down towards the bud and live upon the juices of the plant. Therefore, to avoid this sow your wheat so that it will not appear above the ground be fore the first frost. Do not sow deeper than three inches, for "the vitality of the plant is weakened and sometimes destros ed by its struggle in overcom ing the resistance of such thickness of soil." Plants from deeply planted seed are more injured by the freezing of the sirrface than those from shallow planted seed. This statement was a surprise to us, and it mar be to others. The reason given Is this: "The wheat plant has two distinct sets of roots, viz.: The coronal and semind-system. Our soil seldom freezes deeper than three inches. If the seminal roots are below the fro-t line and the cronal are above, the la'ter ire liflted by the -expansive force of the ice, while the - seminai, being below, are beldl in po sition, and the connection~ between the .two severed. If the seed are covered very shallow, both sets of roots will be 1n the frozen part of the soil and will ti her." This strikes as g w nter lv one of t o the wheat crop, this ht to prove of great tarme not now know Now is the time when croup and .ung troubles prove rapidly fatal. The only harmless remedy that produces immediate resulhs is One Minute Cough h Cure. It is very pleasant to take and 11 can be relied upon to quickly cureB coughs, colds and all lung diseases. It will prevent consu mption.
