NEWS AND HERALD. PWRLISMAD TRI THE NEWS AND HERALD CO. dSCi .J..LhM. , . -0 Thursday. Octeber 25 - 1 100 SOME CONFLICTING VIEWS. The Literary Digest has been pub lishing some ot the political utterances of prominent men of the country, and it is interesting to note how' they dis agree. Mr. Wayne MacVeigh, who wis At torney-General in Presideni Garfield's eabinet, but supported Mr. Cleveland in 1892 and appointed by him ambas sador to Italy, takes a strange view: He says: "Nor can I believe anybody with ,ordinary common sense is in danger of regarding President Mc Kinley's re-election as an endorse ment of the war in the Philippines," and he mentions Senator Hoar's sup porti ig Mr. McKinley "to show the futility of pretending" that the elec tibn of McKinley would be an en dorsement of anti-imperialism, "a policy to which so many of" McKin ley's "supporters are irreconcilably opposed." Mr. Mac~eagh further takes this strange view, which would lead one to suppose that Le was a man without "or linary common -ense." He says: "The larger the anti-imperialist vote for President McKinley, the sooner will the nation return to its true mission." How in the name of common sense could Im perialist McKinley tell how many anti-Imperialists voted for him, even if he was disposed to modify his ,views to accord with thos3 of he sup porters? McKiuleyism is imperialism, and a vote for McKinley is u vo!e for imperialisn. There is tno way out of The.- opinion of Prof. Gdorge T. Ladd, head of the department of plhil osophy and psychology in Yae Uni versity, i1-quite different from Mr. 'MacYeagh. Prof. Ladd has jtist re turned frim a trip aroaund the world, and he declares thit "the attitude of e UtdStates in retainig the Philippinei entirely unj-istifiable," "wrong from the very beginoiing," is "impolitic, immoral, and contrary to ~all of our tradition'." E'rof. Lad goes on to say that -the history of the world shows, that in every case bjea higher (ribe was tried to sub low 'one, the lower one to its level," r~nd seen n t ~ yof' our ps in the Tn~~~ 'thai, "the Philippines an earn to govern themselves just as we have learned to govern ourselves." THE utterances of pa,)ers so dis' reputable as the New York Sun can not affect the fame of G~en. Robert E. Lee, and indeed if his name should be omitted from the "Hall of' Fame" his name would not lose its greatness. The greatness - of Robirt' E. Lee is fixed. It does not need a "Hall of Fame" to establish it. The so-called "Hall of Fame" will amount to - nothing anyway. Th' r nmes selected show that it is peculiarly sectional, and posterityr will noteC thia when they read the trui histories of t bis country. The unprejudice.l mind will put Lee, Jackson, Forest and possibly others above Grant. -ONLY UNTIL OCTOBE R 31st, 1900. "Oh, Say, Can You see?" My skin was. almost yellow, eyes sunken, tongue coated, pain contin ually in back and sides, no appette gradually growing weaker day ny day. Three physicians had given me np. Fortunately, a friend advised trying 'Electric Bitters,' anC to my great joy ad surprise, the first bottle made a decided improvement. I continued their use for three weeks, and am now a well masn.
