A BIT OF HISTORY.
The following bit of State history
from the Greenville Mountaineer may
be of some interest to our readers:
The South Carolina Military Acad
emy was composed of the "Citadel"
located in Charleston and the "Ar
senal" in Columbia. The Arsenal was
a preparatory school for the Citadel,
and the executive mansion was one of
the buildings used for this preparatory
o school, though differently arranged at
that time, and was remodeled for its
present. rurposes. South Carolina
never owned an executive mansion in
the olden days, as the governors were
not expected to reside in Columbia
except during the sessions of the
legislature, and they were usually men
of large fortunes who resided on their
plantations, in the lower section of the
State. In radical times the "Arsenal"
was converted into an official resi
y dence for the chief magistrate, who
was then R. K. Scott, but he was the
only one of that regime who used it.
The gay and the festive Moses lived
8 during a part of his term at what was
f formerly known as the Preston man
sion, now the "College for Women,'
B on Blanding street.
Mr. Daniel C. Chamberlain lived in
s his own house not far from the ex
a ecutive mansion on Arsenal Hill.
e Governor Hampton did not occupy the
official residence during his term of
office, and it was not used again until
e after extensive repairs were made
e when Gen. Johnson Hagood became
e the executive of the State.

to the 31st day of December, 1900.
The tax - le vy for State purposes is
5 mills; for ordinary conuty purposes,
4 mills: for school purposes, :' mills;
making a total levy of 12 mills on al:
taxable property of the county. There
is an additional, a special tax, for
school purposes of 2 mills in Scho d
Districts Nos. 1, 9, 14, 17, 1 and 25,
making a total levy of 14 millN in thoss
school districts, and a special chool
tax of 1 mill in No. 19, making a total
levy of 1:3 mills in that school distr:ct.
There is also a tax of one dollar on
each male citizen betweni the ages of
