The negro, whose p name was Jesse Graydon, went down into Mr. Elder's silo to stir up the a contents, and while in the place be a came overcome by the close, heavy air. Feeling the bad effects of the air, he called for help, but before eny assistance could be given him he was I unconscious. S. Rice. On Thursday, the fourth congres sional district convention met in Co. lumbia and nominated Col. Poinier, of Spartanburg, for Congress. A congressional committee was also elected and Andrew Stewart, of Fair field, was one of those elected to serve on this committee. Resolutions condemning mob law were adopted on the motion of Rev. H. W. Smith, of Winnsboro, pastor of * the A. M. E. Zion Church. QUAY D. WiLLIFORD DEAD. I A Prominent Young Business Man. It is our painful duty to record the death of Mr. Quay D. Williford, one of the most. prominent business men of the community. He had been seriously ill about ten days, and died about eight o'clock on Thursday morn. , ing. 'Mr. Williford was born on the 30th of March, 1867, and was the youngest ~son of Mr. and Mrs. A. Willford. Preparatory to his business career ho took a course in the business college at Louisville, Ky., and began business with his brother, the late W. H. Wuili ford, under the firm name of Q. D. f ford withdrew, and Mr. Q. D. Willi ~y ford continued in his own accont , with remarkable success. In 1893, he was forced to make an assignment on account of liabilities as an endorser. f He then became manager for bis n brother-in-law, Mr. J. L. Mimnaugh, , of Columbia, until January,. 1897, t when he resumed businesas in his own e name. Though a young man he pos ., sessed (remarkable executive abilities e and fine business qualities. He seemed j peculiarly fitted for the mercantile ,fbusiness and had built up a large businesr. His store was always filled with salable goods, and at the time of his death his stock was perhaps the largest stock of dry goods ever brought to Winnsboro. Few men in Winnaboro have been more successful in business He was progressive, con stantly adding improvements. He will be missed in the business affairs of our community. In 1893, Mr. Williford married Miss Addie Robinson, of Edgemoor, York County, who with three small children srvive~him. The entire community rsincerely deplore the sudden end. The funeral services were held at the Methodist Church at 11 o'clock un lFriday morning, and the body buried in the Presbyterian Church yard. Tbe pall bearers were: Active -A. W. Brown, L E.
