It was natural that the month c
April should not prove an exceptic
this year, in bringing forth its inai
table showers. For the past fei
weeks we have had a full share
these showers. So great and rapid a
advance have the grass and trees ma<
lately. that every now and then i
hear such remarks, ."Just look at ti
treesl" "Why, how green everytbir
looks!" or some such remark.
The campus, under the able dire
lion of Mr. H. B. Buist, is being mu
improved. A great many new roa
are seen; flowers and shrabs ha
multiplied, and in time it is hoped tb
the Winthrop campus will be as pret
as that of any college in the State.
Last Saturday afternoon the mer
bers of Curry society gave on t:
lawn of Mr. Witherspoon's residen
an "Easter egg hunt." Ten cents gai
one the privilege of hunting, and mua
fun was realized in "trying to Ond t:
most eggs." The prize for findia
the largest number was awarded
Miss Reaves, one of our students, wl
found altogether, [thirty-seven bean:
fully dyed eggs. Refreshments in t)
form of ice cream, cake, and sherbe
were served, and many "spare dime
were brought fQrth. Quite a ni
little sum was made and no one wi

joyed.

MOSSY DALE NEWS.
Farm operations are getting along
very smoothly considering the short
space of time the farmers have had to
work in. Upland corn is about all
planted and the attention is now
turned to cotton. Some -commenced
planting a week ago, others in the
last few days; some land to prepare
yet. From indications seed will be
rather scarce. Wheat is doing well
and from indications a good yield is
promised. Fall oats are also- looking
well. Spring sowing is now begin
ning to make a little show, but their
success will very much depend upon
the future seasons.
There has been some gardening done
in the last week or so. Some who
planted early on a risk hav the pleas
ure of having a good i r pect for
onions and spring vegetables, such as
mustard, radishes, turnips and peas.
The fruit crop has been very ma
terially injured. There may be a
good apple crop, as the trees are late
blooming.
I am glad to see through your
paper that steps are being taken to
build a railroad fr om Winnsboro to
Camden, which, if accomplished, (and
I hope it will be) will give our town
an advantage in offering iunducements
to draw trade as it will open up a new
territory along its line and give a con
nection with the Seaboard at G.amden.
It will also enhance the valne ojf the
property along its route and give a
new impatus to the varied industries
outside of its social and educational
features. I hepe this road may be
an inducument to the proposed north
western road that is under considera
tien, which if undertakbt' will run
through either Chester er v'iinnsboro.
I hope Winnsboro will win, as the ad
vantages will be in her favor. Push
your enterprise, gentlemen, and never
know defeat.
I am truly gratified to see the har
mony that prevailed in our State
executive committee meeting. It is
ominous of the peace and good will
that exist in the ranks of the Demo
cratic party, showing that our ranks
are solid ',and ready to enter another
campaign knowing the good of one is
the good of the other, and we are all
sailing upon the old Democratic ship,
whose captain, W. J. Bryan, will land
us safely into port at the capitol next
November. Now let each county in
the State emulate the example set by
the State and see that dissimulation
doesunot;exist in our ranks..
Mr J L Cauthen lost a valuable
mule a short time ago; supposed to be
from hydrophobia from the symptoms
presented; though it was only sick
about twelve hours from time of first
notice. It showed a very vicious dis
position in trying to bite another mule
that it has been working with for
several years. When in, the plow it
also made after Willie Cauthen, who
was in the le'd. I also saw it try to
bite a hog that was passing in front
of it, also a negro who was assisting
i- working with it. If it was not that
I know not what.
Mr H B Trapp has has had a very
sick child but glad to report it con.

Mrs G W Brooks is expected to re
turn from Columbia to-day where she
has been visiting her sick mother,
