LOCAL, INTELLIGENCE Tuesday, May 30, - - - 1899 LOCAL BBIEFS. ---On and after June 1st the freight depot will close at 6 p. m. -The postoffice will be closed to day from 11 o'clock a. m. to 5 p. m. To-day is decoration day, a legal holiday according to the federal laws. --The Clemson College commence ment exercises will begin on Sunday, June 11th. The diplomas will be de livered on Wednesday, June 14th. An address will be delivered by Colonel Robert Aldrich. Sixteen young men will graduate this year. McMaster Co. -On Saturday morning Dr. John A Rice delivered a lecture in the Methodist Church on the subject of education. The ladies are working for a worthy ob ject and they hope-that their friends will patronize them to-day and help to increase the chapel fund. Only 25c. per box. PROF. HA1 'S LECTURE. Prof. Hand, of the Chester graded schools, delivered a lecture in the court house on Friday night on "Facts and Fancies of Every-day English." He spoke of the wonderful power of the English language for assimilating words from divers sources and making them its own. He took up groups of words and showed their etymology, the changes of meaning through which they have passed and how often the history of a s ord contained the his tory of a people. His lecture was er ceedingly interesting and was full of valuable iufermation. Don't think you can cure that slight attack of D7spepsia by dieting, or that it will cure itseif. New Scho :1, Bank and Store Bundings Masons Erect New Lodge--Personals. From the standstill at which every thing here seems to have been for the past year, the wheels of progress have again been set in motion, and the next ninety days will see many improve ments in our little "town on the ridge." For the past few years the building now used as the high school has been an eye sore to the people and adis grace to the place, and it is with pleas we see a handsome new school build ing sommenced on "Ivy Hill." This is to be 70x30 feet with an 19 feet ceil ing, and from this main building will be an ell 30 feet long by 25 wide. When completed this will give plenty of room, and along with its location will make it one of the very best in the county. The Bank of Ridgeway has decided to build a handsome brick building to be used as an office. It will be two stories high and will be on the west side of Main street, one above Mc. Eachern's store. Following up the good move of the bank and school, the Masons have de cided to tear down their lodge build ing and put in its place a larger one of brick. This building will be 85x80 feet and two stories high. With such a start as this the wheel should not be allowed to stop, but several more stores and residences be put in, then with some inducements outsiders could be easily induced to move to Ridgeway. Henry Isbell and Seldo:2 Williams, of Camden, spent Sunday here. Miss Essie Waites, of Columbia, is visiting Miss Phillps. Miss Hallie McCormick returned to ongtown on Saturday after a visit to Miss Ethel Rabb. Dr. and Mrs. H. F. Hoover have re turned fronm a visit to Hampton. At th recent examination of the young I. A Route is E.conmended for Fairfield. Frederick E.4Bach, special agent of the postofflee department, spent seve ral days here last week investig'iting the roads, the postoffices, the star routes and the population in this vicinity with the view of making a test of the Winnsboro postoffice for the rural free delivery service. Mr. Bach was assisted in his investigations by Postmaster Preston Rion and Mr. David E. McDowell. Tha result of his investigatio.as is that the special agent has made a report, favorably recommending the establishment of one route, to be served daily, except ing Sundays and other holidays, with Davd E. McDowell as rural carrier. The rural carrier gives bond with two sureties for $4,500 and receives $400 a year for his services. The route as proposed at this place by special agent Bach is as follows: It will leave the postoffice at 7.30 a. m. and go south by way of the Fairfield Cotton Mills, and leaving the mail there for the mill and its community, will continue southward on the Co Milons Given Away. Doty'a' far.s about S miles to the D. G. Ruff corner; northwest about 4 miles on the Co lumbia and Chester road to the Glenn Bridge road, near R. Y. Lemmon's place; northeast about half mile; thence east half mile so as to take-in Yarborongh's mill; north half mile by way of Brown's mill to the .Glenn Bridge road; northeast on that road about five miles to the postoffice in this town. Total distance 23 'miles; area covered 28 square miles; 'farms 103; families more than 200; popula tion over 1,000. As a consequence of this service, Rion postoffice will probably be dis continued. Its business depends al most wholly upon the Winnsboro Granite Company and their mail will all be carried from Winnsboro. They wih eet their mail about two and one half h.>nrs earlier than at present. The whole matter depends, however, upon the department at Wasbington. The special agents merely recommend. The Postmaster General must approve the reports and make the appointments, if they are to be valid and pat into operatien. There appears to be little doubt that this route will be approved. The special agent was sent here.at the instance :of Hon. Stanyarne Wilson, member of congress. Mr. Wilson is taking a deep interest in postal affairs and devoted himself with characteristic energy last winter to the passage of the act providing for rural free de 1ivery. It is his object to have the experiment made at one point in each county embraced by his district. Recommendations have been made for Spartanburg, Union, Greenville and Winnsboro; others will be made later. Special agent Bach has been work ing in South Carolina since last Jan uary and has made about 25 favorable recommendations. These recommen dations embrace one carrier for each place, and with three or four oxcep Tios I wo routes for each carrier. The servicis is now in operation at Cope, Orangeburg, St. George, Elloree, Leesville, Smoak's, Bamberg, Aiken, Johnston, Ridge Spring, Salada, Prosperity, Sligh's Greenwood, Belton, Abbeville, Laowdensville, Anderson, Seneca and Easley. Spartanbrg's, it is.expected, will go into force on June 1 next; and Green ville and Winnsboro on the 15th ot June. The rural carrier is not expected, after the first month, to get out of his buggy to deliver any mail; but each patron along the route will be re quired, if he wants the service, to put a box, at an elevation, angle and po sition that may be easily reached by he carrier as he sits in his carriage. Letteis to be mailed should be dropped into toe box, by each patron into his own box, before the carrier comes alng. If the writer has no stamp, he must wrap up the letter with 2 cents and drop thenm into the box. The rural carrier is required to carry along for tale postage stamps, postal cards and stamped envelopes. Patrous re siding at a distance from the route may arrange with their neighbors on the route to have their mall left. There is no good reason why farmers residing one or two miles or even farthr from the route should n.t be able in this way to arrange to hav.a their letters left daily. Letter boxes for the collection of letters will be put up at the office of the Wiunsboro Granite Company; at D. G. Ruff's corner; at the janction o the Chester and Glenn's Bridge roads, and at the Fairfield Cotton. Mill. Only the carrier will have a key to these boxes. Red Hot from the Gun Was the ball that U. B.
