-Mr. W. C. Beaty lost his fne grey
hound last Monday. It had been bit
ten by a mad dog.
-One hundred and fifty dollars
worth of spring and summer neck
wear just opened up and for sale at
Q. D. Williford's
-We hear that Mr. Ituff McDowell
intends making Winnsboro his home.
We will be glad to have another Ridge
way family in our midst.
-Poles are being distributed along
the railroad, presumably for the long
distance telephone line between New
York and douthern cities.
-M. W. Doty .& Co. is still another
new advertiser added to our solamns.
- Fifteen males are ofered by them
cheap for cash or on time.
-In the revival of railroad building,
we hope Winnsboro will have the
lack to get at least one _of the many
new railroads. Another railroad is
badly needed.
-Mr. S. B. Crawford has taken
rooMs in the house occupied by Miss
Mary Pool, and Mr. R. T. Matthews
will move.into the Ruff house recently
occuped by Mr. Crawford.
-On account of the bad weather,
the meeting of the ladies of the town
which was to have been held yesterday
afternoon at the Methodist Church,
has been postponed antil next Wedne
- day afternoon.
-Mr. H. T. Williams, who for the
past two seasons has bought cotton
here, has moved his ramily to Chester,
where they will reside in future. Mr.
Wimama, however, will buy cotten on
this market occasionally.
-The farmers in the Wateree neigh
borhood are feeling the effects of their J
recent visitation of mad dogs. Mr.
H. G. Wylie lost, last week, two val- j
- able cows from hydrophobia. Mr.
Hugh S. Wylie was also a loser.
- -While Winnsboro is improving,
there is still much room for improve
ment. The want of paint is about the e

We take the following from the
Baltimore Sun:
Orders have been received at Fort
McHenry from tbe War Department
Instructing Battery B, of the Sixth
United States Artillery, to prepare to
move to San Francisoo as soon is pos
sible, there to take a transport for
Manila. Two light bat1hries of the
Sixth Artillery are already at Manila,
and the remaining batteriss have be-tn
ordered there.
The Sixth Artillery was organized
last spring, and its headquarters were
at Fort Mclienry. where its comn
nander, Col. E. B. Williston, now
brigadier-general, was stationed for
Beveral months.
Battery B has many Baltimore men
in it. The battery will go away under
sommand of Lieut. Ri. H. McMaster-.
The other officers accomnpanying it
will be Lient. John K. Cree and Liemn
T. C Starbird. Tbere are now 17t
men in the battery, but it will be .e
.:rited up to the full strength of 200
-n within a few days.

There was published in yesterday'a

ton-Messenger, setting forth that on
Friday last the business men of tha t
city through a 'committee of two gen
tlemen, paid over $690 to the several
negro lodges which owned The Record
building which was 'burned on the
1'.0th of November last, when the plant
,)f The Record was demolished. The
public knows all about this occurrence.
That paper had made an infamous
utterance and its office had to be
sacked. While this was in progress
the building caught fire and was con
sumerd. It was claimed at the time
and 'nas been claimed ever since that
the i e was accidental. We have our
doulro about that; it seems much
wore- o.ohable that the fire was de
iber.ly applied by some irresponsi
ble member of the mob-some light
headed, hot-headed person, such as
always attathes himself to a movement

But however this may be, the point
upon which we would fit public at
tention is this: that the just and fair
minded people of Wilmington have
volntarily I paid for the building
burned. As said above, the printing
office had to be sacked; moreover, the
editor of the paper. bad to be driven
away. These things were acts of
justice-stern jaetice, it is true, but
jastice. But there was no purpose
to vi-it harm upon the innocent, and
whea harm came to the property of
orderly and unoffending negroes,
through uo fault of the good men of
ilington, they promptly, like the
just and generous people they are,
contributed the money and paid for it.
This proves that they do not hate the
ugro, as such, nor seek to panish him

mayor and chief of police whom they
ran eway were white; Manly, the C

because they were either black or C
white; not, primarily, because they t
were Republicans, but because they
wre bed citizens, disturbers of the
