Zion on Friday evening. In ad dition to the '.Mistjetoe Party" some delightful music, both vocal and in. strumental, was enjoyed by the an dience, and refreshments were served. -Rehearsals for the concert to be given by the ladies of the A. R. P. Church have commenced, and there it every reason to suppose that it will be an entire success. It was at first proposed to have this just after Christ mas but It was impossible to get it up before. -A telegram was received from the weather bureau on Thursday night giving notice of the approach of a cold wave to reach here by Satarday - morning. A fal of from 20 to 30 de grees wa predicted. It is probable that the cold weather will continue for severpl days. -The Bight Reverend Ellison Capers, D. D., Bishop of the Diocesse of South Carolina, will visit this Parish tomorrow and will preach at the morning service at St. John's Church. A cordial invitation to at tend both morning and afternoon service is extended to all -- -It is rumored that the town con cil is to have a sidewalk made from Mr. W. 3. Creight's residence to Mr. H. A.LGaillard's. It Is to be hoped. - that this will he done, for a sidewa!k is badly needed. After a rain it is almost impasible to pass along this -~* road, and a sidewalk would be a -great improvement. --The ThirdRegiment United ~Statg Volunteer Engineers have bieen ordered to Cuba, and orders to sail frem Charleston were received on Thinrsday. This regiment has been tationed for several months at Macon, Gia., and hare been in hourly expec tasuon of being ordered to Cuba. Four companies of this regiment were sent to Cuba some time ago and are noi stationed at Matanra. A deep injerest is felt in the movements of tlis~ regiment as Colonel Gaillard is a * native of Winnaboro and one or two - men in the regiment are from here. .TBR POSTOrF-ICE TO BE MOVED' The following letter from the post ofRee department has been received by the postmaster: * Washington, D. Heath, First Assistant Postmaster General.. On Monday nigt Mr. McBride Smith's shop was entered by thieves and a half side of leather and some -toolsibelonging to Charlie Gains were taken. The thieves made a second trip to Mr. Smith's shop on Wednesday night and took the brace that was found near Mr. Cathcart's store on Thursday morning, thus proving that the burglar. who entered the shop -were the same ones who attempted to enter Mr. Cathcart's store. AK ZKIOABLE OCCASION. Among the many pleasant hostesses for which Wlnnsboro is renowned, Mrs. William Davis Douglass deservee prominent mention. An afternoon -tea given by her on January 26th, as slsted by Misses Dwight and Allston, proved one of the maos', delightful social functions of the new year. The informality of a formal tea was most at tractive to the many friends who re sponded to their invitations, and wc are sure pleasant memories will long *linger in the minds of those present. ATTEMPTED BURGLARY. ight John Russell heard a noise and hought that some one had entered hs store and got up to investigate, and he ad his wife look-ed all about but saw no one. John then raised the indow and looked around but saw o one. He knew nothing further ntil nei.t morning.. It was discovered mn Thursday morning that some one ad taken an augur and bored a hole i the back door of Mr. A. B. Cath art's store. The hole was bored just above the bar that goes across the oor. As no one had entered the store it is supposed that the burglar as frightened away by hearing John Russell moving about in the adjoining house. The burglar left behind him the tools that he had used to bore the hole with. It is a pity that those .who are guilty of the many burglaries that have been committed lately should be allowed to go free, for the attempts at burglaries are becoming more fre uent.___ LETTER FROM WINTBROP. Despite the fact that our last two ntertainments came so near together, there was no lack of interest in either, and both werellargely attended. On Wednesday night, 18th inst., we en os ed a treat in the music of the Benedict Concert Company. The harp music by Miss Benedict was par ticularly enjoyed, and Mr. Benedict's marvelous power over the violin had a magnetic infiuence, and held tbe audience spell bonnd. Mr. Benedict responded gracefnlly and obligingly to the repeated encores; his fine se lections made up for the vacant um bers of the Saprano who was unable to sing on account of hoarseness. On Friday, the 20th, we were again visited by Charles Underbill the great Shakpeareaini reader. In a mono logue he did justice to each character in the play of "Rip Van Winkle. ' All present were highly pleased. After the entertainment the girls were permitted to see their friends in the parlor. The next number of the Star Course wIll be the college concert in March. There was a meeting of the Win throF Literary Society on last Saturday evening. The selections were inte resting and instructive.
