sMALLOx IN THE COUNTY
Dr. Langford has reported to Super
visor Tennant that there was a case of
smallpox in his community near
Blythewood. It is said that the man
with the disease escaped from the pest
house in Columbia and came to Blythe
wood. The escapes from Columbia
are reported frequently. We do not
know whether the numerous escapes
reported are true or not, but it has
been charged repeatedly that there has
been lack of rigidity'and strictneas in
the effort to control the disease in Co
lumbia. If the disease is not stamped
out soon, it will spread over the whole
State. Every day some one comes to
Winnsboro from Columbia. It might
be economy to [quarantine against
Columbia, and do it thoroughly. The
wonder is that smallpox has not al
ready made its appearanee here.
Only a few days ago a gentleman
reported a case at Blairs on the Spar
tanburg and Union railroad.

AN UNUSUAL INVEsTIGATION
On Monday evening according to a
statefent made by Mr. Morris Meyers
e was summoned by Policeman Gil
bert to appear before the town council,
nd Mr. Meys-aays that heLwas
formed.that the object of the meeting
is~td itigie into the cause or origin
of the fire last StliYday night. After]
e entered the town hall the doors I
were locked. Mr. D. A. Crawford
acting as intendant administered an
oath to Mr. Meyers, and Mr. Meyers,
then stated what he knew about the
fire about as follows: That he left his
store about fifteen minutes after ten,
and went to his roomn at the hotel.
His first knowledge of the fire was
the sound of the fire bell.
Several other parties were examined. <
It is learned that council was unable
to fix the resp onsibility for the fire.
As it is generally known over the
streets, it might as .well be published
that there is some suspicion thatC
Meyers had something to do with the
fire on Saturday night.
PROHIBITION MEETING.
As is well known to everyone, the
prohibitionists of the Democratic party
of South Carolina, have concluded that
the time for the adoption of their
policy for the troatment of the liquor
problem, is now at hand. In carrying
out their plans, the prohibition con
vention held recently in Colombia, has
nominated a full state ticket to be
voted for at the primaries. The mem
>er of the State Executive Committee
from each county, is charged with the
duty of organizing the forces for pro
hbiion in his county.
The unctersigned has beeu appointed
a member of the executive committee
from this county. In discharging my
:uty as a- member of said committee
for Fairfield County, I now call a mass
meeting, of all who are in sympathy
with prohibition, in the court house in
Winsboro on Saturday, May 14th, at
12 o'clock. We wish to have a full
representation from every neighbor
hood and voting precinct in the county.
Will not every friend of the cause see
that his community is represented?
C. E. McDonald.
Deafness Cannot be Cured
by local applications, as they cannot
reach the diseased portion of the ear.
There is only one way to cure Deaf
ness, and that is by constitutional
remedies. Deafness is caused by an
infamed condition of the mucous lin
ing of the Enstachian Tube. When
this tube gets inflamed you- have a
rumbling sound or imperfect hearing,
and when it is entirely closed Deafness
is the result, and unles the inflamma
tion can be taken out and this tube be
restored to its normal condition, hear
ing will be destroyed forever, nine
cases out of ten are caused by catarrh,
which is no'hing but an infiamed con
dition of the mucous surfaces.
We will give One Hundred Dollars
or any case of Deafness (caused by
catarr) that cannot be cured by
Hall's Catarrh Cure. Send for circa
lars, free.

DEATH OF R. L. T. JAMFS
Mr. Editor: I write this to- inrorw
you of the death of T. T. Janeb, an
old citizen of your c;;unty,.who passed
away at his home, Gunnison, Miss.
April 30th.
Judging from the universal esteenm
and affection with which he was re
garded by all in this community, 1
should think there would be many in
his old home who are interested in his
career, and will read of his death with
sad hearts; especially his comrades
who served with him in the last war.
He felt a deep interest in his old
home, and always read THE NEWS AND
HZRALV carefully. "Wife give me
my letter from home," was usually
the way he asked for his paper.
As a boy, he was a member of the
Fairfield Rifles. At the first call for
troops he enlisted with the 1st S. C.
Tolunteers, served with them six
months, and then joined the 12th,
Maxcy Gregg, Colonel. He saw the
first gun fired at Sumter, and con
tinned in steady service (though se'
yerely wounded, from which he saf
fered up to his death,) and was made
prisoner at Appamattox aid sent to
Harts Isla nd.
After the war he came to Mississippi,
located in Bolivar, where he lived,
beloved by all who kr.ew him.
R. H. Buckley.
