SUARY OF WAR NEWS.
The guns from Morro Castle fired
several times at the :1ag ship New
York, but the New York was Ave
miles off and the officers went to bed
undisturbed. The signals were con
tinued, and no attention was paid to
the Castle's guns.
The fighting fleet now blockading
Cuba had an exciting chase after a
warship Saturday, but it turned out
to be a. Italian warship, and the gun
ne:s were disappointed.
John Sherman has sent his resigna
tion as Secretary of State to the Presi
dent. Sherman says that the reports
about his failing health and mental
decay are untrue, but that in an ex
citing crisi; like the present a younger
man is neeaed. It is thought that
Judge Day, who has virtually filled
the office during the present adminis
tration, will succeed Sherman.
The - President's proclamation calls
for 125,000 volunteers to serve for two
years, unless sooner discharged.
South Carolina's quota will be 2,230*.
It is pretty well settlad that General
Lee, Theodore $oosevelt and Col.
Fred Grant will be commissioned
brigadier-generals.
Headquarters for volunteers will be
established at Washington, Atlanta
and Rishmond.
Senor Cisneros was in Charleston
Saturday on his way to see General
Lee. His daughter is now a quest of
General Lee's family.
John Jacob Astor has offered t
raise and equip a battery of artillery
at an expense of $50,030.
The Spanish fleet was stiil at Cape
Verde Islands on Sunday, but it was
--- rumored that it would move Monday.
* Cape Verde belongs to Portugal, and
it is said that the Uniled States hare
-notified the Government at Lisbon
that, under internatiornal law, the fleet
must be made to more or remain there
* during i ar.? This poionn th
ar o the mlts 't~ales arises out of
the fact that Po ural 5s neutral.
The Mangrove has left Key West to
cut the cable between Cuba and Spain.
The United States Government has
assumed absolute .supervision of all
eable messages sent from Key West to
Cuba.
Thz interest in the war is now in
tense. The President has made a call
fqr about 125,000 vol .ntcers, and they
will be apportioned among the States
according to population. South Caro
lina's qtota will be 2,230, and from
indications this number of volunteers
- will be Iarnished without any trouble
Governor Ellerbe has recommended
to the President that Major Garling
ton, U. S. A., now stationed at Wash
ing andla native of Newberry County,
Khe appointed brigadier general of the
South Carolina volunteers. This action
seems to meet with general approval.
Some confusion seems to - a at
exactly how and when the ;overnor
will call for volunteers. QOe plan
irat suggested was that he would order
The entire State malitia to Columbia,
unteer, but tbis plan seems to have
* been- changed. Under the bill just
passed by Congress, the Governor will
have the right to appoint regimental
officers. It is said that Major J. K.
Aiston stands a good chance of secur
ing a colonelcy of a regiment. Major
Alston is a native of Fairfield.

THORNWELL ORPHANAGE
AND MUSKGBOVE'S MILL.
During a pleasant Visit to friends in
Laurens County-families that have
for generations past been regarded as
the landmarks of that historic county
(and in whose homes genuine hospi"
tality reigns supreme)-it was the
privilege of your correspondent to
visit and make a close inspection of
the places above mentioned.
The former an imperishable mona.
ment to the Southern Presbyterian
Church, Laurens County and the town
of Clinton, which should justly be
proud of such a noble acquisition- an
institutign which bears the name of
one of the most distinguished theolo
gians the world has ever known-the
immortal Thornwell, who'was himself
an orphan.
October Ist, twenty-one years ago,
heralded the advent of that home for
orphans-3ne building only on the
premises with about ten inmates, ex
clusive of the president's family. The
solitary building received the name of
"Home of Peace," and is now reserved
for the accommodation of large girls.
E!even substantial buildings now adorn
the spacious campas; coucrete, granite
and brick being the materials used in
their construction. Their interiors are
neat and convenient in every respect
handsomely finished, much of the
work being done in the technical school.
-demorial Hall preseats a beautiful
interior, while upon its walls is sus
pended a tablet of finest Italian marble
inscribed to the momory of the Sainted
Divine in honor of whom this noble
institution was named. Faith Cottage
:or little girls; Seminary, where all
are given the advantages of a liberal
education; McCormick Home for large
girls; Harriet Home for girls; Augus
tine Home for boys; Infirmary, where
the sick are faithfully nursed; "Chil
dren's Gift Academy" and Technical
School.
Order, heaven's first law, is strictly
observed in every department and
neatners prevails throughout. The
dormitories of the small boys bear
testimony to their training also.
All praise t the venerable and effi
cient president, Rev. Wm. P. Jacobs,
D. D., who has indeed proved himself
a "lather to t11e fatherlts=," whose
orphan family at present, numbering
165, consists of represen:atives from
Scotland, Vermont, and several South
era Scates. Our uative coanty (Fair
field) has orphans there als).
MUSKGIOVE'S MILL.
In Laurens County, on the bank of
the Enoree River, (with its lovely
shoals, picturesque and romantic scen
ery), stand_ the historic Muckgrove's
Mills. the scene- of a battle (August
18, 1780,) between the Americans
under Col. Williams, of Ninety-Six,
aided by Cols. Shelby and Clark, and
a regim:nt of British and Tories under
-;ol, Innis, in which the latter were
routed. There are many spots of in
terest rendered memxorable during the
struggle of our forefathers for Ameri
can independence.
On the crest of a hill, near the banks
of the river, in Laurens County, stands
the umiller's residence (Allen Musk
grove by name) whose daughter Mary
has been justly styled a heroine of the
Revolution, having rendered auch con
spicuous services during those troub
ons times,-whose ii a ttered
by the de
sy) is at to al
el fe,-h -(Butler) having been
..ofined as a prisoner of war in her
father's house. A portion of the old
house is preserved from whence the
dauntless hero made the hazardous
leap, and the tree which rendered such
friendly aid in receiving him among
its spreading boughs-a silent but
forcible reminder of that eventful
nrht. The old mill house, long since
reuced to ashes, has been replaced by
another on or near the same spot. A
powerful combination of machinery is
operaed under the roof entirely water
-grist, saw, fiour mills, thresher and
gining.
-Standing within its walls (in Lau
ren'* County) the eye can rest almost
at a glance upon two adjoIning coun
ties-Spartanburg and Union. On the
opposi;e banks of the river, in Spar
tanburg County, is the "Gullied Hill"
-grand and majestic in appearance
with its red gailies and waving pines,
touching high above the rippling
waters of the stream below. Upon its
crest were displayed the bes con-light
that apprised the gallant Butler of the
approach of his friends, Horse-Shoe
Pobinson aid John R'mnsey, and was
a signal that the hour for his liberation
had arrived ; the former a marvel of
warlike valor, the "Here of the Wax
haws," a modern Hercnles, who was
ever and an.n rendering timely aid to
his compatriots.
Within a stone's throw of the mill
(in Laurens County) is a lone neg
lected grave, on a rugged hillside over
looking the river, reputed to bc the
last resting place of Mary Muskgrove,
with rude stones for marble, simply
adorned (in the balmy month of June)
with Cherokee roses, which seem to
cling voluntarily to the hallowed
mound. H-.E -~

It is Easy to Tell.
People who fail to look after their
health are like the carpenter who neg
lects to sharpen his tooks. People are
iot apt to get anxious about their
health soon enough. If you are "not
quite ivell" or "half sick" have you
ever thcought that your kidneys may be
the cause of your sickness?
It is easy to tell by settwng aside
your urine for twenty-four hours; a
sediment or settling indicates an un
healthy condition of the kidneys.
When' urine Etains linen it is evidence
of kidney trouble. Too frequent de
sire to urinate, scanty supply, pain or
dull ache in the back is also convincing
proof that the- kidneys and bladder
are out of order.
Theis Is satisfaction inknowing that
the great remedy, Dr.KIilmer's Swamp
Root, fulfills every wish in relievinig
wak or dise'a;cd kidneyd and all forms
of bladder and urinery troubles. Not
only does Swamp-Root give new life'
and activity to the kidneys-the cause
o trouble -but by treating the kidneys
it acts as a tonic for the entire consti
tution. If you need a medicir.e take

PREVE1NT THE COLLAR FROM GALL
ING THE SHOULDER.
Souther Farmer and Horticulturat.
As the weather grows warm ther3
is danger of the shoulders of horses
and mules being injured by badly
fitting collars and neglect to use simple
precautionary means.
Even if the gear is properly adjsted
there is risk of the shoulders becom
ing galled from the chafing of the col
lar. This may be prevented by bath
ing the shoulder in cold water at noon
and evening when work is sloped.
Much annoyance and loss of time may
be avoided by the use of this simple
preventive means.
The should of the plow stock, how
ever, are often injured by a defective
adjustment of the collar. This should
be so fitted on that the pressure cansed
y the tension of the traces will be
venly distributed over the the entire
urface. The trace when stretched
hould be at right angles to the line of
he shoulder. The proper and only:
egitimate use of the back band is to1
ecure this adjnstment.
It is not uncommon, however, to
ee the upper hame string tied so loose
ly that the tug to which the trace is:
ttached restsj just over the point of
te shoulder. 'When this is the casei
ore shoulders may be guaranteed.
