The m itter of squari,tg the It .ol districts may .suit s-me connties, but the mnaj rity of Fairfield's delegation present do not think it will suit us on account of c:eeks, roads and already. established school houses. The bill provides that the school houses are to be in the middle of the district, this applying to t.eg.oes and whites alike, whi:h would throw the colored and white children in constant contact with each otner. The measure was carried, however, the yeas an-1 nays being denanled. A. R. p.'s-Mr. Chalmers Likely to Succe -d Mr. Sloan. Rev. T. W. Sloan, of the A. R. The church has its eyes on Rev. John T. Chalmers, of Philadelphia. Mr. Chal mers has always been a favorite with the people here, and they will make every effort to secure him as pastor if Mr. Sloan decide- to return t- Troy. "Mr. Chalmers is second only to Dr. Grier in our church," said a "seceder" yesterday. It is understood that he c:n ge gotten, but not until spring. Charlotte Observer. We would be glad to hear of Mr. Chtltner; getting nearer to the ties that bind him to home and former associations. And especially as it is inconvenient for him t, have his motherless children with him in Phil adelphia. We hope some change may brirg him down South again. Fakers Fledged Him. On Wednesday, at the fair grounds, the "jewelry dealers" robbed a Fair 6ld man of twenty dollars. It seems that they had an envelope arrangement or prize winning device, and while Mr. Brooks Morgan was standing by, looking on, ene of the "operators" snatched twenty dollars from his hand and ran through the crowd. The fellow left the jewelry where it wa;, and a negro who appeared on the scene, apparently a partner, was ar rested. But the white man and the money were gone-as usual. Mr. Morgan consulted an attorney and thought of attaching the man's stuff, but the plan did not materializa for some conftiet or othr. This insti:ution is a family-school for orphan childrer, who are left in poverty by the d'eath of their parents. It is located in n Cliton, South Caro lina, in the upper or piedmont section of the s'ate. The healthfnlness of the same is shown by the fact that in twenty yeatrs there htaye been only three deat Is among the orp, hans. The chil.tren are rcesived from any sect ion of the Union anid from any denotina ion. Tnere were 130 orphans utder~ its care last year from twelve diflerent dtates and ten denominations . t is however, under Presbyteriau con Orphans are not legally surrendered to the institution, but are admitted to be edto ted, and sent ont prepared to take care of themselves. They are, therefore, taught to use both head and bad, the industrial course being full and thorough and the schoolwork eitg egnally satisfactory. Tie support of this institution is whellt voluntary. We saw the "rock man," as the pet rified body of a human being has been so promptly named, at the fair grounds. The story may not be famil iar to many of our readers and we will give it briefly: On Sunday of fair week-so the story goes -a Mr. Buff, of Lexington County, wac ex amining his fish traps or set hooks, when he saw what appeared to be the foot of a man protruding from the bank of the Saluda Rier near Colum bia. He at once summoned a few neighbors and thay commenced to dig. It took only a few momen(e to ascer tain th.,t a form in human shape was buied under the brink of the river. the work went on continuously until all the earth around the bc.dy was re moved. The weight was so great that it took six m'= to lift it from its rest ing plat:.:. Tte news that a petrified man had be.'n found on Salnda River soon spread, and the Columhie news papers soon heralded the information abroad. The '-rock man" was put in a rude box on some staw and was brought to Qolumbia for exhibition at the State Fair. This is wheee we saw it. The body appears to be that of a white man, the mustashe isplainly that of a white man, so are the hands. There is very little appearances of decay about it; only the bowels and stomach are sunken-appear to l.e eaten away or decayed. The hands are folded across the breast as uatural as a corpse. The fiuger nails and toe nails are plain and distinct. There are many theories arivanced concerning this peculiar find. There are rumors that the place was once an old graveyard; then there is a report that some party fro:n Chicigo c.ime down to claim the body, stating that it had been lost or stolen; another story goes that an offer of $2,400 had been made for the sale of the body; an other theory is that it is a cast form of iron or cement, and that the whole matter is a humbug; th'it it was put here some tine ago and the dirt alowed to set tle and grass to grow >e fore Jinding it. 'rThe question arise-1 as to whether odies wil petrify in our soil, etc. any physiciana htve seeni it an.i pro ounc: it genuinn-. Dr. W. E. Aikeni, f uar town, mande a clote examinaztion f ii and he i' satisfied that it is a enuine pe'rifis1 human body. The atter will prove very interesting. Mr. Buff, who found the bode, is aid to be a very reliable man which ives credence to the gentlineness of he whole matter. Electric Extten-. Electric Bitters is a medicine suited for ay season, but perhaps moure I generally neede'd, when the languid exhausted reel ng prevails, when the liver is torpid and sluggish and the need of a tonic and -rlter tive is felt.
