Local 1xrteza -The Constitutiolial Contention convenes in Columbia to-day. -William Stevenson, who was so painfully injured by the train on last Thursday night, is getting along very nicely. The result of Saturday's race seems to indicate very clearly the superiority of Ihe American boat. The cup will not be carried to England this time. LETs HAVE SOME MORE GAMES. Gaillard, returned to Char!e-0 on Saturday. Children Cry for Pitcher's Castoria DEATH OF MR. JOLN FENLY. CEDAR CREK, Sept. 7. Mr. John Fenly, of this section, an aged and highly respected citizen, died at 4 o'c!ock a. in., at his home, on the 4th of September. He was the oldest citizen of this c.ommunity, and was loved by all who knew him. He served in the late war, an4 was a true and b.a.e soldier. Mr. Fanly was seventy-three years old. Ie was a member of Buffa!o Baptist Church and had lived a good christian life for a good many years. Rev. W. 11. Hartin preached his funeral, and his remains were interred in the burial ground at Sandy Level church Thurs day at 11 o'clock. His family has the sympathy of tqis community. D A. -B. A TRIP TO THE COUNTRY. Our reporter took advantige of the presencs of Maj. D. G. Dwight's being present a~id got a day or so off from office life. Pressing Mr. D. into servie we left for the western portion of the coauzty on Thua sday morning, To cne who has traveled the road Eram town to Monticello, in all kinds :af weather, the great improvement in the condition is.very noticable indeed. It is a fact that from Winnsboro to Mr. M. B. Clark's house there is no bd road at all. The corn crop along the road is good, and we are informed that there i considerably more planted this year than last. The cotton crop is a disputed point; ome think it was below last year, while others think it not more than 25 per cent behind. We halted at Mr. Clarke's well for a drink of water and, as is our re porter's usual luck, it was just about meal time. We were kindly invited to ligit and wait for dinner, the tbreatening clonds being used as an ,rgument for us to remain. We -eard a ~an say once that it was better to cat four times a day than to miss it li:ogete;-. Knoe wing, nevertheless, that a meal was awaiting us at the end f our journey we proceeded on this asn's theory and accepted Mr. C.'s espitality. After the rain and clouds ere gone we proceeded and reached h3 home of Dr. fl. C. Arnett "just about meal time" again. We found the doctor full of spirits (not frum ent owever) awaiting our arrival. We spent several days in the vicinity very pleasantly, took occasion to visit ~. W. H. Trapp, who was taken aher suddenly with a chill and had some fever. His condition was much etter next day we are glad to be able to state. We were not long in ascertaining hat the saw mill of Mr. A. E. Davis is the meeting point for the neighbors, o nearly every day we met our friends and acquaintances from diffe rent sections. We were there where the neighbors drove up with stock logs to build a school house. This is bc most progressive sign we saw, ach one contributing a log or two 'tad the sawing being done without harge by Mr. Davis. This school ose will be built near Mr. W. J Martin's and is to be a neat and pre sentable building. Another school ose of its kind will be built at once in the same way, by the neighbors at Monticello. So It will be seen that ox:ticello and vicinity believe in edu ajo:. While at the mill we saw a etleman coming down the road with "soldier clothes" on. We con jecured that it was a confederate vt:ran on his way to the re-ution at Chatanooga But lo and behold it .s a physician going to see a patient dressed up in the State uniform. We p oised not to tell who, he was, so :don't ask us. There is a new ginnery au.i mill going up at Monticello, Mr. Geo, Simmis is erecting it near his house. Itf we get the new railroad throgh Monticello it will be a town some day. Mr. E. iR. Roberts is the principal merchant thera at present and does a very good business so we are inormed. Mr. Calvin Rabb runs a store ont on the edge of town and does very well also. Mr. David Haunter conducts a wegon and buggry shop and is said to be one of the best mechanics in the cntry. We saw Mr W. J. Burley driving a cow and a calf while he was sitting in a two-horse buggy ; either the cow and calf or the team was well trained for they were all moving along at a good We visited Salem Church on Sunday evening expect ing to hear Miss Macie ~Stvesn, our. mziioiary to Mexico, eture, and to hear the Rev. A. G. Kirkpatrick, of the A. RI. P. Church preah. We were disappoinfed in not seeing Miss Stevenson out, the rain very 1kely preventing her. Rev. Krkpatrick preached a very foricble seron on the divinity of Christ. The church was well filled and he preached to an attentive and appreciative au di ~c. IIP sei vices were received gratefully by the congzegation as they tHe is alive to his work and is admired by people of all denominations. 11 was only afew hours before that he had pi'acht'l to his hearers at the Brick Church, and by the time he reached his family had traveled twen ty-fiVe miles. We miet Mr. Thos. Amineism and Mr. J. L1 Steele just returning from the New Hope section, where they had been to obtain the concent of the mem bers of that church to allow Mr. Kirk patrick to continue his work with them at the Brick Church, which church he is only supplying as often as possible. There was a good rain at Salem Church on Sunday, and some hail re ported. At Salem we met our former townsman, Mr. A. W. Ladd, who had jnst returned from a visit to his ven erable mother. Monday morning found us on the road home and midday found us at work. S100 Reward $100. A statement was printed in the Co lumbia State recently to the effect that Constable Stevenson and some others had been lured somewhere on the out skirts of this city and shot at and that the scheme was supposed to have been organized by friends of Jack Fisher and Bill Durham, the two men who were killed by constables in Spartan burg. Stevenson is supposed to have been one of the leaders in that deed. James Fisher, a brother of Jack, was here and was interv'ewed by a repre sentative of the Greenville News re garding the item in the State. Mr. Fisher replied: "I wish you would say that the Fishers-what few of them are left now-if, they want to kill a man will do it in open daylight and won't waylay him and kill him at i night or take advantage of him when he's asleep. I am from North Caro lina and am here attending to my own business and interferinmg with nobody. I understand ITam being watched hieie and in Spartanburg, but there is no use in that.
