A TRANS-CONTIhENTAL SPECIAL
On Wednesday afternoon a covered
wagon containing a man, his wife, and
son drove slowly up Main street and
alted fir a few minutes in front of
the Winnsbori Hotel. The dilapidated
and travel-worn appearance of the
outfit excited some interest and the
members ot the party were questioned
a to their destination, etc. It was
found that the party had left Okla
oma nearly three months ago, and
4ad traveled in their rather uncomfort
ible conveyance a distance of more
han twelve hundred milee. They are
>ound for Wilmington, N. C., which
ity they h. pe to reach in a week or
two.
On the rear of the nagon was a
nop of chickens hatched on the day of
he departure from Oklahom'. They
were i.aturally regarded with some
:riosity because it is not every day
hat we have the opportunity of seeing
-eal, live chickens, that have made a
-elve hundred mile voyage in a
'rrairie schooner." The chickens ap
>eared to have stood the trip better
han the other occupants of the wagon
l'hat i4, we presume, owing to their
ather too tender age.
Another interesting member of the
)arty wa; a c)w, which had been
riven the entire distance.
The son, a yonvg n an of about 25
ears, acted as spokesman, and he
alked very intelligently of their ex
)erience since leaving the wild and
rooly West.

LIVING CHESS.
A great many persons wei e unable
o attend the first presentation of the
diving Chess, and for the benefit of
hese the performance was repeated
ast evening. Too much cannot be
aid in praise of the manner in which
he game was played. As on the first
cabion, those who partiripated
overed themselves with glory, and
othing but the most complimentary
emarks are heard concerning the
harming entertainment.
Almost every seat in the hall was
ecupied by an interested spectator,
nd in spite of the fact that popular
rices prevailed a considerable sum
raQ realized.
The management and all of those
onnected with the game deserve, and
-e are sure they will receive, the
earLy thanks of the entire community.
