THE FOU RTH OF JULY PICNIC.
Oi the second of July an anxious
visitor had cccasion to pass through
the Xortheastern portion of our
coun y, ain judging from what could
be seen from the road , it was .vident
that something was wrong. It was a
daik gloomy day and the thirsting
crops were enjoying a gentle showtr,
yet the faces of the young people seen
through the windows told the sad
story that' something was evidently
wrong. Every drop ot water that
fell from the roof seemed to them to
chime in gloomy accents, "no picnic,"
"no picnic." Yet it appears that
the gentle <upid, touchzd with pity by
the fair n.iden's sighs, was constrained
to intercede for them, and that cvening
a gentle breeze, blowing from the
West, dispersed the clouds and left to
our view the fair blue sky.
It is customary in this community
for caci Sunday school, once a 3 ear,
to give the children a day in th3 woods,
and at the suggestion of Rev. Young
it was decided that all the churches
should unite and, ou the fourth of
July, give a picnic on a grand scale at
the Catawba Falls. And this was the
occasion that was looked forward to
with so much anxiety.
Fairfield and Lancaster both lie in
the lower part of the Piedmont region,
but on the Wateree River; there is a
strip of alluvial land ex ending up a
small distance into Chester county,
and at the head of this is sitaated the
rapids of the Cataw ba-by a misnomer
called the "Cataw ba Falls." The
surrounding country is one of the
granite regions of our State, and the
numerous rocks in the river bed,
mas.ed together, prevents the further
wash of the river.
The body of water forming these
rapips is about a mile in length, and
with a roar that can be heard at a
distance of several miles, it rushes
forwar d foaming and gushing as it 1s
repelled from rock to rock, until it
comletes its descent of about one
hundred feet.
But this is only a part of the scenery.
On both banks of the river the hills
rise at an angle of nearly forty de
wrees until they reach he level of the
surrounding country. They are thickly
overed with housejike masses of
vranite, some of which rises almost
perpendicularly from the edge of the
water to the height of twenty-five
feet, and these are shaded by original
forests of oaks, hickory and pine.
rhe properties of beauty and grandeur
Lhus united makes it worthy of being
:alled-th3 beauty spot of the counties
f Chester, Fairfieid and Lancaster.
But it was not the scenery that at
racted so large a crowd thero on this
ccasion. I mean not the natural
cenery of the place-for in fact a
~rest many of the young people will
idmit that they really forgot to ob
erve it. The whole crowd seemed
ntent upon having a good time, and
1l will admit that they succeeded.
The forenoon was spent in rambling
auong the hills and climbing rocks to
he music of the Ft. Laiva band. At
linner the baskets were all brought
lrward and the contents spread in a
ense shade. Here the correspondent
lrgot himself and recovert d only when
e found that the table had been1
Imptied.
About four o'clock the merry crowd
.egan to disperse, all admitting that
he oc':asion had been a success, except
h3 pastor who says that its success.
r failure will depend wholly upon
he number of fees that he collects

it Seats:
.j- Outr seat frames are nisde of white

Panels are made oval by arranging
the muachin~e with a special rig we have
gotten up, to that when the seat is
fini-died ii presents a convex surface,
thus cansing the varnish to show to
good advanttage, and giving the vehicle
a handsome appearance. Feats are
Sthoroughly ironsed to a pattern so that
they are all alike, anid backs and tops
are interchangeable. Trhe advantage
of this is that if von bave one of our
