THE Supreme Court has at last ren
dered a dec'sion in the registration
cse, which was heard last fall. All
three members of the court differ in
their opinions, though Justices Pope
and Gary concur in the result only
differing as to the grounds which lead
to that te-ult. The court holds that
the complaint or petition should be
dismissed, without passing upon the
conls:i:ut i-nality of the act.

Justice Pope differs with Justice
Gary in holding that the proceeding is
in effect a suit against t.e S'ate, but
holds that equity cannot interfere by
injunction, because there is anl adt q- ate
remedv at law. Ie ard Ju-tice Gary,
therefore, concur in the result, viz:
That the complaiut shoul-l be dis
missed.
Chief Justice McIver dihseniti from
the decision of the majority of the
court. He does not thiok the proceed
ing is in effect an sc:ion against the
State, btcause the object of the action
is not to affect injuriously any property
or righta of properly of the State. "If
the plaintiff should obtain judgment
in the case no interests of the State
could possibly be affected injuriou ly
thereby." In this respe--t the nresent
casa differs widely fromt the case
relied uponi to support that point. Hie
is utterly untable to conaceive of a
- plain and adequate remedy st h w.
By injunction is the proper remedy, he,
thinks, for the taxpayer under the-cia:
cumstances to proceed.
We have no doubt but that a writ of
error wi, be t,a4en antd the case taken
to the Unkted States Supreme Court.

made converts are nc~t urged to go
West, but encouraged to remt'am in
South Carolina and proselytize as
much as possible.
Many persons wonder that a doctrine
considered repulsive to the majority of
Christian denominations, should meet
with success in a supposedly straight
laced portion of the Union I have
pondered this matter well and con
clude the. anti-woment suffragists atre
largely responsible for this Mor-mote
invasion. In the mnumm-tied colu-uans
bf the News and and Cout i -r may
frequently be found fermented a- tic'cs
by demented women foa-ning t'gain't
-wuman suffrage, advising thei' sex to
fiee from it as from a "poisono!' -ep)
tile," to avoid that "whirl of degrt

themselves to the Scriptural duty - of

who are so afraid that their delicate

for every South Carolina y oung women
to have a husband, never mnind how
much she may hanker after ma-rimony-.

them to turn their- thoughts to the

is true, but an excellent article."

tutions and ways of Southern society

It was "Will" Wideman who wrote
an enthusiastic letter of congratulation
to Mr. Cleveland, with whom, how
ever, lie had no personal acquaintance,
just after the result of the last Presi
dential election, and closed it by
saying:
"I am not asking you -for an office.
The big ones I can't get; the inter
mediate ones, no doubt, are all spoken
for, and the litt'e ones I don't want.
There is one thing, however, you can
bestow upon a good, worthy Demo
crat. As we are about the same size
physically I wculd like to get your old
clothes. The weather is getting cold
and the tai ifs high.
"P. S.-As I am probably the first
applicant along this line please file
this letter."
We are acquainted with Mr. Wideman
and this is a characteristic letter from
him.
