We have pondered patiently and impartially the arguments in behalf of woman suffrage sa be-iutifully pre sented here during the last few days, have absorbed the rhetoric and ad mired the oralory. We are convinceJ. We feel that the t me is ripe for a great, far reaching reform, 1 hat the march of civilization and the conditions of the period de mad a changre in the relation of the sexe Studying the subject carefully, fol lowing wheie the arguments and facts of the fair orators have led, we have learned that man is and has been for years the uncomplaining victim of op pression and injustice and that his duty to himself, to the world and to the laboring mil.ions of his sex deintuds that he ronae bimself from the lethargy in which he has so long and inglori ously lingered and demand equal rights. Under the present system the oppres sion and repression begins in earliest childhood. In the conservative house holds where lingering relics of primi tive barbarism are yet the objects of superstitious, blind veneration "girls first" is the motto which ever blights the aspirations and bsfis the ambi tions of the embryo man. The boy is taught from the first that girs are to be yieldst te, deferred to, fought for. If his sister chooses to scratch and bite and hit him he may not scratch or * bite or hit back. The girl is served Airst at table, is given the preference in the matter o~f clothes. - It contirtues so through all the years of life. We learn from the statements of the ladies who. have spoken here - _ that Dearly all the colleges in the coun try established- by men for men have opened their doors to women. Yet there is not a female college in this broad land where the most deserving or ambitious or eager y-oung man can obtain admission or secure a diploma. Here in our own fair city Furman * - University invites woman students within its hospitab'e portals; but no young mar, however he may ejamor at the gates of the Greenville Female College, the College for Women or Chicora College, wtll have heed given . to his clamoring, except by the police. He cannot even go to them as a visitor except under degrading limitations and supervision. Brothers, is this right, is it just? Why is it ? Are we b~easts of prey or uncleau things that we should be deeme i unworthy to put1 soot within those hal:s except on stated pccasions? Let us oo.thec roung women the justice to say that i:.dividually they are probably not of that opinion. Yet gnder the existing system this ont rageous end debasing discrimination exists. .Our yougng men are absolutels unprotrcted against the ravages and givalry of the female sex. We' are taught to uncover in the 1 presence of women-a symbol of glavish sers'ility, a token of reverence, * e confession of the superiority of the< *sex to which we shoulci, by the teach-i ings of modern though', count our selves in all things eqaa!. ls uot ti a relic of medizevai bat biristn which I counted ~nman as in sweiyytiimtz i su.>erior t mans, and shondd it tot b abolishbed by the enslighstesi. spi-it ort this age? * ~ We groGan and sufikr enssi r hiws diret'yv discriunatintg agiainst uH. lIn this State,. f-r ins-t'tnce, a mai:rried woman may have a separate ita'e to handte.a, dispo-e ot as she lea~ts. Then the pro ceeds are turned into the church treas ary or forwarded to strange heathens and the pulpits and newspapers an nounce proudly "see what the women have done" and sneer at the parsimony and irreligion of man. He is expected to give woman the clear part of the sidewa'k, to surren der to her the seat, he -has paid for in public places and conveyances, to punch powerful men with whom she may pick qnarrels, and if he is licked he is an object of contempt, ivhile ir, perchance, he hardly icke, -slighting remtarks are made. concerning the quality of "brute strength " He is expectid to go forth to war and expose himself to bullets and blades in de fence or vindication of a country in habited and enjoyed in equal. propor tions by the two sexes while the woman wins glory by remaining at home, after having kind y buckled on his sword for him. We submit that there are many nn who iL the next war will g'adly do the stayiig at home, ,vho will pick lint and cook and lay the soothing hand .upon th. fevered brow and that if there is to be reform indeed the opportunity to do s>) should be given them. We have only time and spare to g:ruce at a few of the inequalities and injustices to which our sex has too long submitted. We beieve we will touch a responsive chord and that men will rise to arsert the rights and equal ity now denied them by their oppres sors. We think of organizing a cam paign and instigating a c,unter revo lution. The public need not be aston ished to find before lono Jared Con way Garlington, Narcisso Gatavus Gonzales, William Winter Ball and a few other young, beautiful and gifted repre-entatives of our down trodden sex in progress over the State arousing men everywhere to the vindication of their Heaven endowed rights. * * * As to the women, we confess we have not been able t.o discover what they complain of. Taxation without representation is tyranny when applied to natioas but individuals always have submitted .to it and must always do so. Every mi nority in this country endures tax a:ion without representation. If the women were voting here now they would be paying taxes without repre sentation if they were anti Tillman women. There is not and. will never be this side of the millennium such. a thing as exact justice in this world-' very fortunate it is., too, for most of us. But the millionaire's vote is offset by that of the pauper and the ballot of the bishop is killel by that o~f a be sotted vagabond. It wou!d >be the same way if women vo:ed. The wages of women are generally lower, we are told, than those of meni. Bt wages can not be regulated by roting or legislation. Employers pay for value received. Men might and do :omplain that women are driving them mt of many occupations and employ nents and that it is the pressure of oman competition thift- ' lowering vages. There are facts of nature a . poli ics which forbid the general partici >~tioni of women in politics. They do io want office,. one lady tells us But ye observe in Colorado and Kansas ,ey have jumped into office as fast as hey could--and a mess they have nade of it. Miss Clay thinks the subordinate >osition of woman is the result of sin, nd that the rulership of man was a >ophecy rather than a command. Recent discoveries have demonstrated tha all the organs of the body are under the cor rol of the nerve centers, located In or nea he base of the brain, and that when these ar eranged the or-ans which they supply wit erve fluid are a~so deranged. When 2t is re embered that a serious ijur to the spine ord will cause paralysis of te body belo' te injured point, because the nerve force i reented by the injury from reaching th aralyzed portion, It will be understood ho' be derangement of the nerve centers wi] ause the derangement of the various orgarn yh ich they supply with nerve force. Two-thirds of chronic diseases are due t te Imperfect action of the nerve centers a te base of the brain, not from a derange ent primarily originating In the organ i.1 elf. The great mistake of physicians reating these diseases Is that they treat th rgan rather than the nerve centers whic. re the cause of the trouble. Da.
