Tuesday, April 30, ; . ; ; CuBA's revolt hasn't got enough home-backing to succeed. ---o- ----- IT is thought that a full bench of the U. S. Supreme Court will rehear the income tax cases on the 6th of May. THE Augusta Chronicle says: "Gene ral Butler had an ovation in Augusta." The General was the orator there on Memiorial day. On account of the difference in the seasons, difierent times are obierved in the different Southern States to hold memorial exercises. In Georgia, it is found that the 26th of May is the most suita ble. Prof. Wcodward to Lee:.ure. The alumni of the South Carolina University and the South Carolina College and several citizens of the town have invited Prof. Woodward, of the South Carolina College, to de liver his famous lecture on Shakespeare in our town. He has consented to do so, and will deliver the lecture cn Tuesday evening May 7th in the Court House. We call our citizens' special attention to this lecture. We claim, without an~y self-complacency, to be a cultm-ed and intelligent community, and the best way to sustain such a character, is to show our appreciation of such a master of our language as Prof. -Woodw'ard is deservedly reputed to be. Prof. Woodiward's success in this leld of his talent is spoken of with -unstinted praise by the press of the State and the friends of education who have heard him welcome his splendid sud masterful presentation of a subject which can never become wearisome to lovers of literature. To hear Prof. Woodwa:d is there fore an opportunity we should al take -advmntage of. - No lecture of such a kind has ever been delivered among us. We have often wished to hear such when we - read of them being delivered else where. Now when such a rare oppo tunity .offers itself, let all of our people, founag and old, attend, and while cultivating and improving our selves by listening to him, give Prof. Woodward such an audience as will inspire him with that encouragement and enthpsiasm which a large number of people always gives to a speaker BVCKHErRAD BUDGET. Meane, one of our hon ored near neighbors. It waa p'eant, too, to listen to his young'life's anec dotes, of the time he him-elf was al-o a near neighbor, for be wvas born at his grandfather's home. He is also a great admirer uf Fairfield's son, Ge-n. Jobhn Bratton. Me had very g-od news to tell me of his late uncle's family, vir., Capt. Edward J. Means. Bo~lh the "local" and Mr. John G. I thist it right for all the people to help support by tax all those (in educating them) unable to make a living by the work of their - own hands-the deaf, the dumb, the blind. And all prisoners should be put to work, that they might make something to eat and wear without throwning the burden on tlbe taxty-v ers tn irely for:th~eir support. And the prisoners for homicide should la!>o the tbalance of t heir lives t.) repay as i nuch as possible the heirs and assigns >f the persons they had so injured, and he cost of the State in keeping them ti close confinement from doing any >ther crimes. The late hardest cold weather which has made its appearance once before in 1835 has destroyed the house fly. The fig bushes are all killed. This right of the franchise guaranteed formerly by our State and with the United States government, but which has not been acted on in a faultless manner by our State in carrying its prvisions out, will remain in full force and virtue, acording to the United States government. My brother, D. R. Feaster, writes me that he supported Maj. T. W. Woodward at Feasterville in 1888, but that he got there too late in the day to do much, for he was only influential enough to turn ten votes for the major, but it he bad got there earlier he thinks the major would have goiten one hundred votes. He wrote that some of them (jokingly) threatened to run him off for supporting the major. I really did heer lately that the major was elected on his last canvass. It seems that our President is hold ing his own very well amidst all the dentuciation and hatred ever hurled at so high an efficial. I believe Mr. Cleveland thinks he is i ight, and it is a well known truth that no one man has ever been known to give perfect satis faciion to everybodr. 1 cannot help having great faith in Irm because he rcognized the greatness of our most distinguished hero and statesman. Therefore, I say, God bless our Presi dent. April 27.-This is a beantiful morn ing at 6.55 o'clock. We have had a very fine rain. Our octogenarians, Mrs. t . Ladd nd Capt. T. M. Lyles, are well.
