We pre same that be is busy getting up his 'data now as he declines to act as one of the commissioners for his county to get up an exhibit for the Atlanta Exro Pition on the ground that a great deal oi his time will be devoted to the w.men suff -age cause. Tiv. igns are unmistakable that the currency will be the leading issue in the next campaign. It aannot be denied that the free silver sentiment is growing in the We.t and in the South. Its increase in the South is attributable to a great extent to the failure of the Democrats to repeal the tax on State banke, and thus allow each community to tide ever a temporary contraction of the currency in the large money centreu. LARry GANUT is threatening the Redister that if it doesn't quit talking so much peace and unity, a new daily will be started in Columbia. The Piedmont Headltght doesn't use these exact words, but that's about what it -amounts to.- Says' the' Headlight: I "We will state for the benefit of McLaurin's organ-grinder in Columbia that an iron ribbed reform daily will most assuredly be established in that city, and neither is there the slighitest danger of it starving to death. Like uto the Piedmont Headligdt, it will represent the entire people, and not I any little faction of sore-heads and de feated *ffice-seekers." We presume by "little faction of sore-heads and defeated office-seekers" is meant the 1 "Forty." -a Tnz women of Columbia, as is very generally known, wi.l issue a special edition of tne State to aid the Columbia Hospital. By this noble work, these 1 noble women will not only be doing at great work of charity for Columbia, but for the State and indeed for other ~ States and countries. We are told that the hospital has patients from '] England, Ireland and New England. This special edition will he issued on the 10th of May. The success of the enterprise depends upon the sale of the paper and advertisements. The pighlishers solicit advertisements from the to.wns. The publishers desire Winnsboro to give an advertisement showing its local advantages for factory buildings, climatic attractions, korticultural advantages &-c. As the publishers very well say: "Immigra tion societies are being formed and this paper will be kept as a reference, and reach places our State organs do not-" Can't Winnsboro help herself and charity? Railroad in Earnest. Several days ago we received some railroad information which is; to the point. Our people have talked rail roads and factories amlil it has gotten to be a chestnut. We punblish to-day a letter from a gentleman in this county which has the right ring t'o it. He is willing to give all that the road should ask-right-of-way and depot site. If our people want a road they must act. This gentleman wants the South Bound extension and will have it if he can do anything to bring it his way. Let's keep the ball hot while it is rolling. Tnis is the latter part of April and ery little cotton has been planted yet. he farmers are, I think, further be ind with their work this year than iey have been in years. But if the eather continues favorabe for a week r two they will get the most of it lanted. Corn planted during the month of [arch is up and looks splendid; in test instaincs it came up to a beauti il stand. I think all of the farmers in this mtion have planted sorghum cane thi; ear. This is as it should be, for it iE iuch cheaner to make it than to buy ;, besides it is valuable as a ford tot tock, bogs, etc. Gardening is progressing rapidly, onsidering the backward spring, ,nglish peas, turnips and radishes arc yoking exceptionally well. A Brother.in-law of B. R. and George D. Tillman Killed by Another Brother In-lay About a Road. (Special to the News and Courier.) EDGEFIELD, April 24.-This morning at 9 o'clock in the store of Hammond & Co., at this place, B. L. Jones shot and killed John C. Swearingen. About three months ago Jones in dicted Swearingen for obstrneting a public road that led through the for mer's place, and Swearingen was tried and convicted at the last term or Court of the offence. It seems that soou after the obstruction of the road the rails used in forming the obstruc tion were burned, and Swearingen c aimed that Jones' son did the burni ing, while Jones alleged that Swvear, ingen was tbe guilty party. This among other causes brought on bad. blood between the perties. A few days ago Swearingen caused the arrest of a negro and lodged him in jail, claiming that he could substan tiate the charge against young Jones by the negro's testimony. Jones bailed the negro out. This morning Swearingen c'ama to town to s e about the matter,-na, -as-the t-,timony of the coroner's investigation discloses,I on entering the store was asked by young Jones if he (Swearingen) had said be burnt the rails, and if he did it was false. Other words passed be tween young Jones and the deceased, during which time Mr. B. L. Jones came in and told Swearingen if he de sired to talk to anyone to talk to him. Swearingen threw his hands on his hip pockets, at which both parties drew, pistols and commenced firing. The witnesses could not say who shot first. Immediately after the fi-ing Swearingen fell to the floor and died in twenty minutes. The ball that killed Mr. Swearingen entered at the pper margin of the right .ear, pene trating the posterior portion of the brain. Jones was not hit. The verdict of the jury was in ac cordance with the above facts. Mr. Jones surrendered and is now in jail. The par-ties were brothers-in-]aw, Jones having married Swearingen's sister. Swearingen was a brother in-law of Senator Tillman and Ex ongressman Tillmans. He had at tained his 50th year and leaves a family. M'G.s. Children Cry for Piteher's Gestoria. A CURIOUS CALCULATIOlN. Around the World 206 Times. An eminent physician has~ made a curious mathematical calculation in giving the workings of the human heart in mileage. He shows that in a lifetime of 84 years the blood as it passes through the heart is thrown a distance of 5,150,880 miles, which, in a continuous stream, wo.uld reach around the world 206 times! Keeping in view this constant strain on the heart, and taking into consideration the abuse it receives from over-exertion, alco holic and other stimulants, is it any wonder that it finally becomes affected, refuses to perform its work, and causes death? The fct can be readily understood that one in four has aweak heart, also the importance of treating that organ ras soon as its affected con dition is in the slightest degree manifested. Reader, if you have any reason whatever for believing your heart to be affected, you should attend to it at once. Do not hesi tate. Manuypersons who die suddenly of this disorder have never suspectcd its presence. yosephz Boody, Plerpont. N. "For 20 years I was seriously troubled with heart disease and nervous prostration, the latter affecting the sciatic nerve of my left side.
