us that he visited a lady in this county
several days ago who was eighty-six
years old. She showed him a hand
kerchief spun from flax and wool by
her mother. This handkerchief is 150
years old. It will be a valuable acqui

and Davis for the Atlanta Exposition.
Let us hear from some others in refer

Dr. Simon Barnch, formerly of this

of New Yor k city, passed through
Winnsboro on Wednesday. He went
to Columbia and made an address be

this association at one time while
living in the State. Judging from his
reputation at the North we would say
that the ascociation was highly enter

Mr. Editor: What has become of the
peace and harmony scheme of the
"Forty?" Whom did our delegates
appoint as a working committee in this

Hurt by a Runaway Horse.
On Wednesday at the south-bound
passenger train Capt. Claskson called
rBE NEws AND HERALD reporter's
kttention to the fact that he had seen a
horse running away near the railroad
rossing in the northern part of town
with a road cart and the driver thrown
to the ground, and was apparently
lead. Speculation was rife as to who
it was, and several went at once to the
he scene of trouble. It proved to be
andy Emerson, the iler. He was
riving an Oregon mare and wau
taking the dinner to the chain gang
wen he Wnet the train. The mare
bhrew him out and stunned him, but
i wounds are not serious. His left
wrist is painfully hurt, but not broken.
Lbe mare ran several miles before
toppng. The road Eart was totally
recked. It was left at Win. Wood
ard's, on Mr. J. M. Stewart's place,
wo miles west of town, where the
nare was stopped.
It Is, Hello fidgeway!
The telephone reached the Winns
oro Hotel about sundown on Tuesday
evening. Mr. E. C. Heins, the pro
jector of the line, took the contract to
erect it and has been delayed in his
work by failure of the arrival of the
wire. But the work was rapidly
pushed after the arrival of the wire
and we can hear people laughing in
Ridgeway very distinctly. THE NEws
?.NDI HERATLn received the item con
erning the handkerchief mentioned
oday ever the phone, and will have
news delivered regularly over the line.
The rates for messages will be pub
[ished later, but at present the phone
is free until Monday the 29th. So any
e who desires may have a chat with
!riends along the line free of cost
mnti] Monday.
It is amusing to hear some try to
ipeak through the pone. The "hello"
ou hear around town reminds you
f a traveler hailing at a house in the
ountry in the night time after every

n the edge of town got up and looked
ut so we hear (?) during the night to
