GONEIIOR EvANs says that he will
ignore Judge Goff.; injunction in the
matter of the thipment of liquor into
the State. While we regret that our
domestic troubles cannot be settled
among ourselves, the defiance of a
Governor of the law-cannot be ap
proved. Mr. Evans holds the highest
office in thW-State,-and-if-he-treats an
order of the United States Court with
contempt, he ought not to be surprised
- if some of the humble subjects of the
State shall defy the enforcement of
some of the obnoxious State laws.
The Governor's course is not very
commendable, and his example is net
calculated to inspire a very high re
spcct for law and order- As we hare
said we believe in the principle of the
citizens of every State settling their
own domestic troubles among them
selves. Yet the constitution of the
United States must be respected and
the Federal Courts have the right to
construe that instrument and all citi
zens must take the interpretations of
the Federal Courts .whether they like
it or not.
Tn N ewberr y Herald and Newos'
bomb has exploded. It said sometime
ago that the explosion would soon be
heard, and Messrs. Caldwell and Pope
have set it off. Judge Goff, of the
*United States Court, has enjoined
Governor Evans froni taking any steps
towards convening the Constitutional
Convention. The novel feature of this
csse is that the bill alleges that Gov
ernor Evans, Senator Tillman, Messrs.
Hemphill, Efird, McGowa i and Barn
well have fomned a conspiracy, and the
c ase has been very at rongly put in the
bill. Along with t&' order of injne
tion are some interrogatjries pro
pounded to Governor Evans, and it
will be interesting to know how he is
going to answer them. The conepi
racy feature, we believe, wilt faiil, be
* cause it is not an agreetnent to divide
delegatas to the Constituti.nal C-snven
tion, but an agreement to divide can
didates to the convention. That the
registration lawR are uncometitutional
we have not got the ..lightest doub-.
and we believe the Cort* will so de
clare at the hearing oni the 2nd of May
in Columbi~a.
- These same gentlemen h.sve scuriied
an injunC-ion restraining all offisers of
the State trom seiaing liquors, &c.,
shipped from other States t o con-ignees
in this State. This queton will also
be heard ini Columbia on the 2nd of
May. The cohiplainiints will win in
this matter, too.
More Constables A ppoInted.
Whatever may be th~s outcome of
Judge Goff's orders, the appearances
now are that there is going to be a
. lively how-de-do if Gov. Evans car
ries 'out his intention of seizing liquor
after it gets into the State. There can
be little doubt as to his intentions as
he appointed ten new constables
yesterday for the State and has sent
three additional ones to Charleston.
He says he expects a fiood of liquor t~o
come into the State, but is determined
to seize every drop that may be' dis
covered That is who the force was
increased. On the other- hand it .is
expected that wvhenever any seizures
are made the constables will be promp
tly jailed for contempt and there will
come a long series of legal battles up
to the Supreme Court of the United
States.
The papers had not been served on
Governor Evans or Commissioner
Miixson vesterday, but Deputy Marshal
Hlickson' is expected to be on hand
this morning and serve them.-Register.

RIDGEWAYNOTES.
IIDGEWAY, S. C., April 23.-The
Ridgeway Rifles celebrated their first
uniiversary last Saturday, April 20.
T he features of the day was a picnic
atid "fancy" drill given by the com
pany at Jenkins Springs, eight miles
from town, on the Longtown road.
A beautiful silver cup offered for
the best dhot was w i by Mr. C. D.
Tidwell. The cotmpany was addressed
by Mr. Samuel Mc''ermiek who made
cuite a nice little talk, and who also
presented the prize. After dinner,
which was very much enjoyed by all
(especially so by a patent medicine
man who eat everything in reach, and
, ent off "gnawing a ham bone"), an
election for officers was held. Mr.
W. J. Johnson n as re-elected captain;
in fact, very little change was made.
Five new members were received, all
of whom were put before the company
by M, Raffle, who was master of
ceremonies.
The day passed off very pleasantly
and everyone went home proud of
their boys in blu.
Miss Laura Stewart, a young lady
about fifteen years of age, who lives
at Longtown, was badly burned last
week. She had gone out into the
woods near her father's house and her
dress being ignited by some burning
brush, came very nearly being fatally
burned. Dr. Harrison was called and
attended the unfortunate young lady,
who was getting along very nicely at
last accounts.
Miss Lou Egleston, of Winnsboro,
is spending some time at Mr. H. W.
Desportes'.
Miss Enice Black, who has been
spending some time with her sister,
Mrs. H. W. Desportcs, will soon re
turn to her home in Greenville, S. C.
Misses Sallie and Pearle Rembert
are spending some t:me in "town"
visiting friends and relatives.
Mr. W. S. Wilson, who has been
very ill with rheumatism, though yet
quite ill, is thought to be better.
