TRE COTTON MILL OLD AND NEW.
Hr. Editor: It is possiblo that the
ideas existing at present in county and
town about cotton mill people is based
upon facts; but they are facts that
no longer exist. We kn,w that the
thought once prevailed in our country
that he who labored for a livelihood
was not the most respectable. At
that time, as a matter of course, one
who went to a cotton mill was a
laborer, a constant laborer, one whose
labors was looked after. Thiq was
enongh to bring the man into social
odium. They may have been con
sidered disrespectful. Disrespected
they may have been, disrespectable,
& they were not, necessarily.
Good people come to the cotton
mills today with there old notions in
their heads and refuse, for a while at
least, to hold up their heads. They
think how they once esteemed "fac
tory folk," and of what their neigh
bors will think. On the other hand,
there are good people refusing to
come to these factories, because they
fear their old opinions. What are the
conditions that face us today? La
borers are respected and labor is re
spectable. From the richest to the
poorest in our land today men are
busily engaged, day in and day out,
at some occupation. We must note
another change, if not already cow
plete, being rapidly wrought. The
advantages socially, religiously and
intellectually are not to be found in
many country districts today, but have
passed to the cotton factory villages.
For the last twelve years the substan
tal coantry people of former wealth
and culture, and those of not so much
Seducation, it may be, but honest men
Sand gozd, have been moving to the
Smills. They are still moving to them.
SHere they find pleasant and profitable
'employment, good associates, if they
-desire, (or evil, if this be preferred,)
Sthe best of schools and good church
privileges, if people desire any bet
ter than this, they must go elsewhere.
If they are driven to the wall by rent
ing land, if they hare lost their homes
by misfortunees of various kinds, if
they be in some remote district where
they have no schools and churches, if
they are willing to work, to work in
dustrionsly, not ground by hard task
masters or cheated by dishonest enm
ployers, then come to the cotton mills
If there be some wh >are making good
and descent livings for their families
on farms and are giving their children
good social, bchool and church pri
vileges, let me say to ?uch, dmn't think
your friends are any less worthy of
your esteem, who have left the old red
hills and sand covered bo.ttoms, the
fallen down empty school h'n e, and
di'apidated church, and gone to a place
-that ofem s them better things.

homes, and as far as I know they are
